The CFAES Wooster Diversity Committee invites you to get to know many of the 40 nationalities represented at CFAES Wooster at their cultural tables.  See/hear Ghanaian drumming and the College of Wooster African Diaspora Xylophone Ensemble.  Join the OSU Wooster family as we celebrate the diversity of our campus and explore our differences in a welcoming environment! In Shisler Ballroom on Thursday, February 28 from 11:30 am-1:30 pm.  A light lunch is included in this event free to BuckID holders.

Victor Paez has observed the unfolding of the current humanitarian and political crisis unfold from its infancy.  Since 2016 Ohio farmers and members of the OARDC community have been providing material support and advice to Victor in a farming project intended to supplement the diet of seminary students and the church community as well as providing general support to the relief effort.  Victor will describe the origins of crisis and its impact on urban and rural dwellers.

Paez left his career as an electrical engineer to lead his local congregation, Iglesia Bautista de Vista Alegre in Caracas where he serves as lead Pastor today.  He also the founder and leader of the Seminario Bautista de Venezuela.

Dr. Kyusuk You is an agricultural research engineer of Agricultural Research Service in U.S. Department of Agriculture. He specializes in robotics and machine system development and is now working for the intelligent pesticide spraying application since 2017. He obtained his MS and PhD from department of agricultural and biological engineering, University of Florida.

Dr. Kwonil Jung currently conducts research as a Research Scientist at the Food Animal Health Research Program. He is interested in studying the pathogenesis and disease mechanisms of enteric viral pathogens in domestic pigs.

Dr. Chang-Won (Charles) Lee joined OSU in year 2005 and is a professor at the Food Animal Health Research Program. Dr. Lee has a focused research program in the field of pathobiology and control of zoonotic and animal pathogens including influenza viruses. He enjoys playing tennis, vegetable gardening and chatting.

Dr. Sunjeong (Sunny) Park manages the STAR lab (Service Testing and Research Laboratory). She has a PhD in Environmental Science from OSU and a master’s degree in Environmental Engineering from Johns Hopkins University.

Dr. Chanhee Lee is an assistant professor in the Department of Animal Sciences. He joined OSU in 2015 and has been working on ruminant nutrition and nutrient management to increase nutrient utilization efficiency and to lower environmental impacts. Dr. Lee has a PhD in Animal Science from Pennsylvania State University (2012) and MS from Seoul National University (2007).

The Safe Zone project aims to create a more welcoming and more inclusive campus environment, to strengthen community, and to encourage networking among faculty, staff, and students toward the goal of supporting the diverse individuals and communities with minoritized sexual and/or gender identities.

The Safe Zone Project addresses the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, asexual and pansexual (LGBTQQIAP) people. This training is designed to:

• Provide a general overview of issues and concerns faced by LGBTQQIAP individuals and communities
• Increase awareness and understanding about sexual orientation, and gender identity and expression at The Ohio State University
• Provide resources to enable students, faculty, and staff to act as better allies to people marginalized due to their sexual or gender identities, and to continue learning after the training
• Promote a safer, more welcoming, and more inclusive campus environment in which students of all sexual orientations and gender identities can live and learn fully

Safe Zone Trainings are a nationally recognized program, and a great addition to any  resume.

LGBTQ Populations on Campus: How We Invite All Students to Live and Learn Fully

A talk in the series Cultural Connections:  “Where Culture Meets Agriculture”

Appy has worked in higher educational settings for six years, holding positions in California at The Claremont Colleges, CSU, Dominguez Hills, and Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.

Appy obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree at UC Santa Cruz in Art and in Literature in 2003 and his Master’s degree in English from Claremont Graduate University in 2013. Continuing his studies at OSU in the PhD program in English, Appy combines formal study of American literature and queer theory with professional research in Education focused on pedagogical practice and peer mentoring. Appy co-authored a paper for the University of New Mexico’s Mentoring Institute Annual Conference, and has presented in numerous venue on issued faced by LGBTQ communities and strategies for inclusion on campus, including the American Academy of Religion.

Appy combines his academic focus with a love of all things creative, helping students to build caring and fun spaces and events for students to enjoy. Appy enjoys reading science fiction, playing RPGs, and wearing ties.

The Office of International Affairs is seeking applications for its Academic Enrichment Grants, which support activities with lasting impact across the globe. The grant competition is open to faculty, graduate and undergraduates whose applications focus on research projects that address global issues, connect discipline-specific research to programs in diverse cultural settings, explores the languages, cultures, arts, social sciences and area studies and/or promotes active collaborations with institutional partners. The competition will award grants between $500 and $8,000. The deadline to apply is Monday, February 9.

Prospective applicants may download a sample application to review questions and information required before the online application goes live on January 8.

Please join us for this month’s Wooster Science Café Thursday, December 7th from 7-8pm. It will be in the upstairs event space at Spoon Market & Deli (144 W Liberty St, Wooster). Please come early if you would like to get food and eat before the cafe (you cannot bring it upstairs to the talk). There will also be light appetizers upstairs.

Dr. Shauna Brummet, President & CEO at BioHio Research Park and adjunct professor in the Department of Animal Sciences at The Ohio State University, will present “A Peruvian adventure – Alpacas and their Quechua shepherds”. 

Currently serving as the President & CEO of BioHio Research Park, an Affiliate of The Ohio State University, Dr. Brummet is a molecular biologist by training and worked many years in the biotech, open innovation and biomedical industries. She also raises alpacas as part of a farm business and has interests in the Peruvian Altiplano region and its Native People and alpacas. She plans to talk about this unique animal that is known for its fleece, the origin of the camelid family and their immune systems.

These classes have almost always been half Americans and half internationals.

These local food trucks offer fusions from different corners of the world, Korea, France, Mexico.  Last month I set at a table of folks from here and abroad and enjoyed the variety.

Housing listings:   A graduate researcher asked me for tips on finding housing.  I told him it is currently difficult due to the large number of pipeline construction workers in our area, but those who seek an apartment, room or house can go to the Wayne Metropolitan Housing Authority which is across the street from Buehler’s Grocery Store (downtown) on 345 North Market Street Monday through Friday 8 am to 5 pm an request a free photocopy packet showing addresses, phone numbers and prices.  Please feel free to contact me about these or similar matters.  To see the housing list I picked up and scanned, go to:

The Postdoctoral Advisory Council and the Postdoctoral Association will be hosting an immigration Q&A session with the staff of OSU’s Office of International Affairs (OIA). We will have Carina Hansen (OIA Director), Amanda Giandinoto (OIA Immigration Officer), and Marc Hedien (OSU Office of Legal Affairs) to answer questions and offer advice regarding OSU policies, visa issues and other immigration related queries.

This session will be geared more towards understanding OSU’s policies in handling immigration issues rather than a general immigration help session

A limited amount of pizza will be served.
