In the Amazon, Chevron is responsible for one of the largest environmental disasters in history. They have been deliberatly dumping large amounts of oil in the Ecuadorean Amazon, it has been going on since 1960 to today. Chevron, or Texco when this first happened, was found guilty in 2011 and ordered by the court to pay $18 billion to help clean up the large mess they created. The judgment was upheld by a court in January 2012. Instead of taking responsibility for it, Chevron is doing everything in their power to avoid having to clean up the disaster they left behind in Ecuador.
The company dumped 18.5 billion gallons of toxic waste sludge into the streams and rivers on which local people depend for drinking, bathing, and fishing. This sludge contains two of the most toxic chemicals known to man: benzene and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. In high amounts these chemicals cannot only kill what is living in these streams and rivers, but they can kill humans who drink this water or eat food out of it. More than 1,400 people have died due to cancers that are related to the pollution. Chevron is not only damaging the environment in Ecuador, but they are damaging the lives of the people who live there. It is such declarations like The Rights of Mother Earth that mkake acts like this illegal and assist in cleaning up the Amazon.
This oil spill may have actually increased the number of tourists that environmentally struggling places usually have. With it being in the news, on the internet, and advertised elsewhere, the oil dumping that Chevron did may have increased the amount of nature-based tourism and the oil-based tourism in the area. The Chevron disaster has also brought state and national governments closer due to them seeing the impact of the oil dumping on tourism and advertisement, and now they are wanting to protect and expand the tourism destination. A disaster like this is going to increase not only the tourism in the country but it is also going to make more people realize how terribly awful Chevron is for not doing anything about their mess. Even with the declaration being in place and promoted throughout the entire world, this mess may be something that is too large and costly for the people of the counrty to clean up.
