First-Year Aspirations

At this point I do not have a definite career goal. I have many different interest that I have yet to hone in on a desired job location or company. What I do know, though, is that my dream title would be a social media marketer for a very large corporation. I find the digital world very fascinating, and find social media branding interesting and groundbreaking. The outlook for marketing positions is growing rapidly because of social media and advances in technology, and I want to be apart of it. Hopefully during sophomore and junior year interships I will be able to hone in on a specific industry or company and focus my attentions on developing the skills they are looking for in their marketing positions.

First Semester of Freshman Year

First semester went better than I could have expected or asked for. I made some really great friends right off the bat that I share many common interests with, and they are equally as focused on their education as I am. I involved myself in two student organizations, Fisher Cares and Movement Variations, which helped me get involved in the Ohio State community and feel at home on campus. Also, the programs that I was accepted into before the start of school really helped carve a path for my first semester. The Business Scholars Program and Fisher F.I.R.S.T opened up so many experiences and opportunities for both professional and personal development. They also pushed me to focus academically, and I am proud of my first semester grades and the motivation I developed to reach my goals. Speaking of goals, I planned out my four years here at OSU and the things I hope to accomplish before I enter the “real world” of jobs and life. Looking back at first semester overall, I know I made the right choice coming here and am excited to see where the rest of my college career takes me.

G.O.A.L.S.

On this page you will find my current list of goals and expectations for myself for my time at Ohio State and beyond. It is important for me to make steps to reach these goals, and as I do, I can develop more things to strive for. Feel free to read through and discover a little bit about my dreams and expectations for myself.

  • Global Awareness: Honors & Scholars students cultivate and develop their appreciation for diversity and each individual’s unique differences.
    • During my second year at Ohio State, I will participate in the STEP program to learn and develop interpersonal skills related to openness to diversity and work towards presenting a STEP signature project to hopefully in turn be granted a $2000 grant towards a study abroad experience.
  • Original Inquiry: Honors & Scholars students understand the research process by engaging in experiences ranging from in-class scholarly endeavors to creative inquiry projects to independent experiences with top researchers across campus and in the global community.
    • To fulfill this category I will need to expand my horizons and get creative. I do not have a definite interest in a basic research experience, but I do have creative interests in the areas of dance. This year I am exploring different areas of dance with my dance team so that next year I can choreograph my own piece that will highlight the talents of my dancers and create a memorable piece to be performed for others.
  • Academic Enrichment: Honors & Scholars students pursue academic excellence through rigorous curricular experiences beyond the university norm both in and out of the classroom.
    • In addition to my specialization of marketing, I will be pursuing a minor in communication technology to add a digital focus. My goal is to be a social media marketer, so this minor should help me develop additional skills that will be useful in my desired career path.
  • Leadership Development: Honors & Scholars students develop leadership skills that can be demonstrated in the classroom, in the community, in their co-curricular activities, and in their future roles in society.
    • By junior year, I have a goal to be on the executive board in at least one of the student organizations I have committed myself to. I want to dedicate myself to the organizations I am passionate about and develop my skills far enough to be able to lead others to do the same.
  • Service Engagement: Honors & Scholars students commit to service to the community.
    • Throughout my four years, I will participate in as many service events as possible. Being in the Fisher Cares student organization, it puts these opportunities directly in my reach, and I am more than happy to be apart of it and give back to others. It is especially important to me to stay humble in life and my career, and I will stay committed to volunteering and helping others in any way I can.
    • I also want to be apart of an extended service trip. Whether that be the Fisher Cares spring break trip or a Buck-I serve trip, I want to commit myself to make a bigger difference.

About Me

Hello! My name is Andrea Ott, and I am a freshman, marketing major from New Knoxville, Ohio. My hometown is a close-knit, small village of people that if you blink you might just miss, but it has made me into the strong valued, determined person I am today. I am just starting out with my time at the Fisher College of Business at Ohio State and will be following my marketing specialization with a minor in communication technology. I am a member of the Business Scholars Program as well as the Fisher F.I.R.S.T Program and am a recipient of the Land Grant Opportunity Scholarship. These three first-year involvements have helped me adapt and flourish quickly as a college student and have also given me many opportunities to develop professionally.

In terms of campus involvements, I am currently a part of the Fisher College of Business community service organization, Fisher Cares, where I participate in service events and attend group meetings. I am also involved in a student-ran dance team organization called Movement Varitations. We get together to share our love of dance and create routines to perform at campus events such as BuckeyeThon to share our talent and joy.

On campus, I also hold a student assistant position at Curl Market dining services. I am developing skills such as customer service and leadership that will be easily transferable as soft skills for a marketing career in my future. It also focuses my time management skills to keep me busy and involved to get the most out of my freshman year.

Feel free to browse my pages and learn more about me through a timeline of artifacts that help showcase my involvements and time-capsul moments starting with the first day I stepped onto Ohio State’s campus as a college freshman.

Fisher Impact Day

A day of service is always a memorable moment for me. Fisher Impact Day was fun, eventful, and humbling, as volunteering experiences always are. With nothing more pressing to attend to at 8am on a day off school, I couldn’t think of something more gratifying than spending time giving back to those in need.
My friends and I were grouped together to first make paracord bracelets for military men and woman, and then switch stations to meal prep ready-to-make, family-sized dinners to be sent out to help solve world hunger. We ended out the day of service at noon, but I was enjoying the experience so much, I could have gone much longer.

I think it is so important that the Fisher College of Business makes an effort to show we care and give some of our time away from classes to focus on others. I plan to commit to this day of service every year during my time here at Ohio State and keep myself humble as I strive for my own goals.

Etiquette Dinner

Before this event happened, I had very high expectations. Several upper-level business scholars relayed that this was one of their favorite events from freshman year, and I was very excited to attend. The purpose of the event was to teach participants proper dining skills that will become very useful for professional dinners in the future. I did learn very helpful tips and expectations as promised, but I was also granted a delicious meal from the Blackwell Inn that was a highlight of the event compared to campus dining places.

Every participant was expected to dress perfessionally and each table had a host that guided us through the meal, so all-in-all the event felt very official and everyone took the guidance seriously. I appreciate Fisher and the Business Scholars Program for putting this event together and allowing me the opportunity to attend. I learned dining expectations that I otherwise would not have known when in the future I attend my first professional dinner.

Movement Variations Dance Team

When I came to Ohio State, I was unsure how or if I could continue exploring my love for dance. I have been a dancer my whole life, and a competitive one at that, which just means I have always made it one of my first priorities. I did not know what OSU had to offer as far as dance student organizations that I could fit into my school schedule, so I went to the fall involvement fair and searched through all of the tables to find my options. From there, I choose Movement Variations as my ideal team to join. I talked and meshed with several of the girls and made my decision to audition for the team. This was very nerve wracking. I had been on the same dance team my whole life so I did not know what to expect. Luckily, my audition went better than I could have dreamed, and I made the team. Now it is one of my favorite parts of the day going to practice, and it is a great outlet from class work. I am so glad I found some place to continue sharing my love for dance and I plan to be apart of this organization for my college career.

OSU Football Game

If you ask just about anyone on campus, Ohio State football games are a defining part of their time during first semester every year. I was beyond excited to attend games and to cheer on the buckeyes with my new-found school friends. Being a student at Ohio State has an obvious benefit of becoming a real buckeye, and football games are a time when so many students come together to support and cheer on their school’s team. It creates an incredible bond between people that may never even meet, and is something truely special. OSU has so many traditions that I now get to be apart of, and it is one of my favorite parts about attending this school. Go Bucks!

Fisher F.I.R.S.T

The Fisher F.I.R.S.T Program has already given me several opportunities at Ohio State. To start off, I got to instantly meet people on campus that I had things in common with such as first generation status and being in the business school. We got to come to campus and move-in earlier than most students and participate in two days of early arrival events. From this program, I was also given a helpful mentor on day one to give me tips and tricks to “survive” OSU. I loved being able to ask her questions and get answers from a real student that went through the same things just a few years before. It made me feel more prepared for the semester and gave me confidence in the new adventure I was beginning.
The program continued throughout the semester with monthly reunion meetings to catch up and make sure all participants had the resources they needed to succeed. We were also specially invited to lunch and learn events that brought in Ohio State alumni and key speakers to give advice and information of how to succeed in different areas of our lives as college students. I am very grateful to be apart of such a caring program that checks in with me to make sure I am meeting my goals, and next year I will become a mentor for an incoming freshman to pass on my advice like my mentor did for me.

Fisher Early Arrival Program

Move-In day was exciting and scary all at once. Since I was a Freshman in high school, Ohio State had been my dream school and finally after so much time I was starting my journey. The rush of the morning kept my adrenaline high as I loaded up moving carts to the moment I sat down for the first time on my new bed for the next eight months.

I unpacked quickly as my early arrival program was starting right away, and officially walked out of the dorm for the first time as a college student. After an introduction dinner with my parents and fellow program participants, I hugged them goodbye and tried to keep the spirits high as I was being left alone for the first extended period of time. I was more than ready, but nerves have a way of invading uncharted spaces.

Fisher Early Arrival Program was such a great experience, I met so many incoming freshman that had the same rushing emotions as myself  and connected with some great friends right away. The program days were packed from day to night with everything from ice-breakers to key speakers to student panels that, all combined, prepared me just a bit more for what college was going to throw at me in the upcoming four years.

From the program, I also gained a helpful sophomore mentor that guided me throughout the week and was a great student resource for insider tips to survive freshman year at Ohio State. The student panels and mentors were my favorite part of the program, and I learned a lot from the wisdom they shared with us.
