Vegetative Characteristics:

Seedling: leaf blade and sheath glabrous, ligule membranous

Stems: 0.2-1.3 m tall, erect, branching at base, glabrous

Leaves: up to 30.0 cm long, 4.0-10.0 mm wide, base of blades pubescent; sheaths closed, glabrous except for trichomes at mouth and along margin; ligule a folded membrane fringed with trichomes, to 2.0 mm long

Reproductive Characteristics:

Inflorescences: panicle, 3.0-15.0 cm long, yellowish when mature, cylindrical, approximately 1.5-2.5 cm wide including awns; spikelets 2 florets, 3.0-3.5 mm long, 1.6-2.5 mm wide, with 5 or more bristles; first glume up two-thirds as long as spikelet; lemma equaling spikelet; palea equaling spikelet, strongly transversely wrinkled

Fruits: caryopsis; enclosed within entire spikelet, or glumes may be absent

Special Identifying Characteristics:

yellowish rigid inflorescence, 5 or more bristles per spikelet; base of leaf blade pubescent
