Vegetative Characteristics:

Seedling: Auricles present, sheaths pubescent to glabrous; blade pubescent to glabrous on upper surface, glabrous on lower surface; ligule to 0.4 mm long, membranous

Stems: erect, often bent out and upward at base, to 1.1 m tall

Leaves: blades 4.0-30.0 cm long, 3.0-8.0 mm wide, upper surface pubescent to glabrous, lower surface glabrous; sheaths glabrous or pilose; ligule very short, membranous, truncate

Reproductive Characteristics: 

Inflorescences: spike of many several-flowered spikelets, 6.0-23.0 cm long, 0.7-1.7 cm wide; spikelets 4-8 flowered, 11.0-18.0 mm long including awns; glumes strongly nerved, .0-13.0 mm long including awns; lemma 8.5-15.4 mm long including awn, firm; palea 6.8-8.4 mm long, 2-keeled, keels scabrous, tip rounded

Fruits: caryopsis, lemma and palea attached
