Moth Mullein, Verbascum blattaria L.


Family: Scrophulariaceae; Figwort Family

Vegetative Characteristics: 

Seedlings: cotyledons spoon-shaped 

Stems: erect, 0.6-1.2 m tall, slender, simple, rarely with 1-3 secondary branches, glabrous below, minutely pubescent above, trichomes glandular

Leaves: basal leaves spoon-shaped, forming rosette, alternate above cotyledons. Oblong to lanceolate or elliptical, sharply pointed, clasping, glabrous, doubly serrate

Reproductive Characteristics: 

Inflorescences: open racemes; flowers borne on pedicels, pubescent, trichomes glandular; corolla 25.0-35.0 mm wide, yellow to white, with 5 fused petals along elongated axis, stamens with soft violet pubescence.

Fruits: capsule, 5.0-10.0 mm diameter, round, 2-chambered, pubescent, trichomes glandular, many seeds per capsule

Seeds: 6-sided, 0.5-1.0 mm long, columnar, light to dark brown covered with rose of pits 

Special Identifying Features: 

Erect herb from basal rosette; leaves glabrous; pedicel longer than fruit.
