Family: Polygonaceae; Buckwheat Family

Vegetative characteristics:

Seedling: Erect or prostrate hypocotyl, cotyledons lance-shaped with rounded tips, smooth on upper and lower surface 

Stem: Erect or spreading, branched, smooth with swollen nodes; reddish

Leaves: Alternate, smooth, lance-shaped, pointed at the tip, with a watermark. Membranous fringed stipules (ocrea) surrounds the nodes. 

Special Identifying Features: 

Swollen nodes, ocrea with a fringe of hair-like bristles

Reproductive Characteristics:

Flower: Pink, rose-purplish, green, or white. 5-parted flower in a dense terminal spike. 

Seed: Oval to almost circular to almost circular, 3-sided, smooth, black, shiny
