A Society Growing Out of Traditional Retail, Case Study One: Nordstrom

How is it possible to do everything right but still perform poorly? This is exactly the case for Nordstrom. In the climate of the retail apocalypse, the company poached dozens of Amazon employees, constructed and renovated a state of the art e-commerce infrastructure, controlled it so that the number of stores is at the most optimal level and introduced a loyalty program. Furthermore, this issue extends far beyond just Nordstrom. Tens of (used to be) large and prosperous retailers, including Gymboree, Payless, Claire’s, Charlotte Russe to name a few, have filed for bankruptcy in just the past two years, leaving some shopping centers completely vacant, according to a research brief by CBInsights.
