The Office of Postdoctoral Affairs and BioScience Writers will be hosting a fellowship writing workshop focused on the fundamentals of crafting a compelling, competitive fellowship application. This workshop is co-sponsored by The Office of Postdoctoral Affairs and Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
To win NIH grant funding, the ability to clearly, critically, and effectively communicate your proposed research ideas is essential. By the end of this workshop, you will understand grant structure and the grant review process, be able to use key elements of grantsmanship to help you win funding, and have confidence in your ability to execute your plan. With specific focus on NIH R grants or F- and K- fellowships, you will learn how to strategically design your grant writing timeline, new NIH grant requirements, general grant organization and strategy, the peer review process, scoring criteria, and much more.
Learning Objectives:
- Describe the purpose and structure of each section of a NIH grant proposal
- Implement writing strategies that will help your reviewer understand your grant proposal
- Identify a good hypothesis
- Explain the NIH expectations for addressing rigor and reproducibility in your grant proposal
This workshop will include hands-on writing exercises and direct feedback from BioScience Writers and your peers. Because of the hands-on nature of this workshop, participants will need to come prepared with a draft of their specific aims in order to use the skills learned to modify their fellowship application throughout the workshop.
Although core content will focus on NIH award mechanisms, writing exercises and advice will be applicable to those targeting NSF and other fellowship applications as well.
