Summer 2019 Reading Club: Getting Familiar with the US Academic System

The Office of Postdoctoral Affairs is starting a book club in Summer 2019 for postdoctoral researchers as part of the Professional Development Certification and to further familiarize postdocs with the US academic system.

Time: Mondays, 12:00-1:00PM (June 17-August 12)
Location: Research Commons Room 329 (Conference Room), 18th Ave library

This summer, we will read The PhDictionary: A Glossary of Things You Don’t Know (but Should) about Doctoral and Faculty Life by Herb Childress. Each week, we discuss several thematically-organized entries that familiarize postdocs with different aspects of the US academic system, such as

  • Differences between academic positions
  • Job application material and writing conventions
  • Interviews and campus visits
  • Different types of academic publishing.

Every week, one of the participants will be responsible for leading the discussion. A list of available dates/topics will be available the week of June 10th for participants to choose from.

Participation is especially recommended for international postdocs; however, it will be of value to anyone who wants to pursue an academic career in the US.

The first five people to register will receive a copy of the book for free.

Click here to register. Space is limited.

PLEASE NOTE: To receive credit towards the Professional Development Certification, you must attend at least 80% of the book club meetings. Please register for the Discipline-specific Elective under the Academic track in Buckeye Learn to receive credit.
