Forestry and Wildlife Camp

Do you have a child who is interested in Wildlife Conservation or Forestry?  Maybe they just enjoy being outside and learning about nature? Or maybe they haven’t had an opportunity to explore the outdoors and all it has to offer. A weekend at 4-H Forestry – Wildlife Conservation Camp might help them decide on a career, or introduce them to college opportunities they didn’t even know exist!

Youth ages 12 – 18 from across Ohio are invited to attend this unique camp held at the Elizabeth L. Evans Outdoor Education Center/Canter’s Cave 4-H Camp in Jackson, Ohio. The camp’s location set, in the rocky hills of Southern Ohio, allows campers to explore the beautiful sandstone gorges, visit the natural waterfalls and see the ancient hemlock that make up the forest.  While they are at the camp, they will also learn about the Native Americans who once lived in and around the numerus rock shelters that can be found on the 100+ acre property. The camp is being planned and implemented by OSU Extension professionals, partnering with staff from Hocking College, Soil and Water Conservation and Central State University. Both 4-H and non-4-H youth are invited to attend.

For more information about this Fall weekend camp, please contact the Highland County Extension Office.

Ohio 4-H Teen Leadership Council

Ohio 4-H Teen Leadership Council (TLC) applications for the 2019-2020 year are now available!  Please let any interested individual know, so they may apply!  Please note, because it is only a one year term, current TLC members who wish to continue their service must re-apply.

The Ohio 4-H Teen Leadership Council (TLC) is a statewide group of 4-H teens and young 4-H alumni that provides a youth stakeholder perspective in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of Ohio 4-H programming. In this process, council members develop knowledge, skills, attitudes, and aspirations needed for future success.  Council members share advice and recommendations to 4-H professionals in order to improve, strengthen, and expand the Ohio 4-H program.  Members also make recommendations regarding opportunities for Ohio 4-H teen programming. They serve as a sounding board for Ohio 4-H program direction.

  • Applications and more information for this group are now available online at: go.osu.edu/TLC.  Please note applications (and other materials, including letters of recommendation) are due (not postmarked; received!) by Friday, August 9, 2019.  We recognize this falls during some county fairs, so encourage teens to apply early!  We will accept applications as early as today!  The term for selected individuals will be September 1, 2019-August 31, 2020.

Let’s go explore camp at Open House!

Canter’s Cave 4-H Camp is having it’s annual Open House on Sunday, May 5th from 12:00 – 4:00 p.m. This is a good opportunity for 4-H Advisors, club members and parents to come and see our wonderful facility and enjoy a day at camp. Canter’s Cave 4-H Camp offers campers a chance to learn, develop life skills and form attitudes that will help them to become self–directing and a productive member of society. Camp becomes a learning laboratory that allows youth to apply their new knowledge to real-life situations. Since the camp day is even longer than a school day, learning continues around the clock while campers make new friends from Highland County as well as surrounding counties all while having fun.
