Certified Business Advisor from the University of Toledo

Bachelor of Arts in Agricultural Communication and Agricultural Business from The Ohio State University

Professional Experience:

Chris Smalley has been with the OSU South Centers Business Development Network since 2009. In this role, he has worked with a variety of small businesses in many industries to provide information and education in the three main areas of business: money, marketing, and management.

Prior to Chris’s employment with OSU, he worked as a Financial Services Officer for Farm Credit Services of Mid-America, which fit his interest in helping the agricultural industry. As a former lender, he has the knowledge and understanding of what is expected from financial institutions and passes that on with his counseling.

Community/Personal Business Experience:

Chris Smalley has an entrepreneurial spirit. He grew up assisting his parents in a retail business as well as the family farm in southern Ohio. At age 6, he was even helping at the cash register.

Chris owns and operates a landscape and lawn business as well as a small family farm in Jackson County. He first became part of the landscape industry when he was twelve years old. He started his business again and has experienced not only the gratification of owning something of his own, but also had the opportunity to walk-through the exact process that his clients go through—to start an LLC, do taxes, hire and fire employees, do payroll, and more.

Chris has a strong passion and interest in agriculture as well as the growth of rural Ohio through small business development, especially the people and the work ethic that he sees so he tries to help their dreams become a reality that is why he is so committed to his job.
