Photos

With about 225 university and medical center administrative professionals registering, we had another successful year!

For the first time in 3 years, the OSUAP Professional Development Conference was back in-person, allowing attendees to create connections and learn with colleagues.

Presentation slides are available below.

A special thanks to all of our presenters, donors, and planning committee!

Welcome Slides

Keynote: Marvelless Mark Kamp

Our keynote speaker, Marvelless Mark, helped take us from great to “rock star.” We got energized, engaged, and learned new strategies to build Rock Star Teams. Marvelless Mark gave us four solid rock star success principles in an interactive and engaging EXPERIENCE! We left with new, easy-to-apply, understandable strategies and tactics that show us how to perform at a higher level, drive change, work more efficiently in teams, take daily massive action, and turn teams and colleagues into raving fans.

Breakout Sessions

Session 1

Redefining Professionalism: Inclusive and Authentic Communication, Jodie Leister, M.S.Ed, LPCC-S, CEAP

The world of work has changed markedly over the last few years, and it can be challenging to navigate, being mindful of our own needs and those of others. This workshop will focus on how to adjust to ever-changing ideas of what professionalism is, and how to communicate effectively and adaptively.

Microinterventions: Strategies for Action, Sophia Antoun, M.A. (she/her/hers)

This workshop focuses on how we can address microaggressions. Participants will learn microintervention strategies that can be used when we experience or witness a microaggression, as well as learn how to prepare for microintervention in the workplace. This is an application-based workshop, and participants will have numerous opportunities to practice these strategies as well as reflect on how they can use them moving forward.

Get in Shape for Your Next Career Move, Steph Mizer, Senior Manager, Talent Acquisition

Getting that promotion or new job can be a real workout! Hear from Ohio State’s own recruiters on how to be in good shape for your next career move. Bring your resume to have it reviewed by a recruiter and get insider tips on how to make it even better!

Session 2

Elevate your Brand: Rock your LinkedIn Profile, Erica Banta, MBA, LDSS

In this session, participants will hear how to leverage LinkedIn and LinkedIn Learning to elevate their personal brand and advance their professional and personal development. We will get to know LinkedIn as a platform, share ways we can build our network and maximize value, and talk beyond the profile with learning, development, and engagement.

Thank You for Listening, Dr. Ana Berrios-Allison, LPC

Listening deeply is the port of entry to realizing the quality of our connections to our personal and professional relationships. To listen and being listened to is what allows us to relate to others with real intention. Steven Covey once said, “most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply”. We spend a lot of time teaching vocabulary, and little time teaching the value of silence and listening. Most of us think about what we can say that will make a difference. Could we consider the possibility that the quality of our listening can make an equally powerful difference? Through this experiential workshop, participants will create opportunities to explore the foundational qualities for their interpersonal skills, including our blocks to true listening.

The Nine People You Need in Your Success Circle, MJ Abell, M.S.

Be intentional about seeking out and investing in relationships that help you thrive personally and professionally.  Learn about 9 types of partners or perspectives and, using your Success Circle Planner, note which are in your network now and where you are missing a key ally.  Leave with actions to connect or reconnect with others in ways that are genuine and reciprocal.

Session 3

Project and Event Management: Tips and Tricks, Quanetta Batts

Are you occasionally assigned to manage special projects or events in addition to your normal work responsibilities? If so, this session is for you. Come learn some tips and tricks that will help you get started quickly, stay on top of the details and ensure the success of any project or event.

Setting Boundaries, Melissa Shivers, PhD, Senior Vice President for Student Life

Administrative Professionals wear ALL the hats ALL the time…but should you? This session will honor the unique role of the Administrative Professional, while exploring ways that these critically important team members can establish and fully embrace their own boundaries in the workplace. From important lessons learned through the pandemic to analyzing why it can be difficult to set parameters at work, this session will be interactive, inspiring and fun, and is meant to help you achieve your own brand of work-life harmony.

Making the Most Out of Microsoft 365, Mandy M. Gagliardi, Prosci Certified, ITIL, Comptia A+, Comptia Network+, MCIWSM, MCIWD, CIWCI, Senior Design Analyst for the OTDI

Learn how to work efficiently and effectively in the Microsoft 365 suite with new features in known tools such as Word and PowerPoint, brand new tools such as Planner and Whiteboard, and how these features will interact with Teams.

THE SCIENCE OF GAINING INSTANT RAPPORT WITH ANYBODY, ANYWHERE
Daren Martin, The Culture Architect
Tuesday, June 14
10-11:30 AM

People form an impression of you (and by association your organization, department, program, etc.) in a matter of seconds. People make conscious and unconscious judgments about whether they like you, would like to work with you, and want to connect with you. I demystify the science of rapport and examine strategies for how you can gain instant rapport with anybody, anywhere.

Targeted outcomes:

  • increased influence
  • increased buy-in of objectives
  • greater likability
  • improved rapport skills

Slides are available.

Daren explored the Social Styles worksheet.

THE EVOLVING ADMIN: WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE? (video was available through Dec. 19, 2022)
Chrissy Scivicque, Eat Your Career
Thursday, June 16
10:30-12 PM

In today’s workplace, the administrative role is significantly different from what it was a decade ago, or even just a few years ago. It has evolved dramatically and continues with each passing year (more so than ever recently!). As the role itself becomes more critical to business operations, the expectations for those in the role shift and expand. After all, in any evolution, it’s survival of the fittest!

With ever-increasing demands and ever-shrinking resources, admins need to adopt a new set of skills to succeed. In this session, we’ll take a look at where the field is heading and what you can do to not only stay competitive but establish yourself as a peak performer.

As a participant, you will learn…

  • Where we’ve been, where we are, and where we’re going next!
  • The key skills you need to take ownership of your administrative career and embrace a mindset of success now and in the future
  • Practical strategies to elevate your performance and competence, and inspire others in the process
  • How to identify and take advantage of opportunities to contribute at an even greater level

OPTIONAL PRE-WORK EXERCISE

GO BIG OR GO HOME: CREATE CAREER-DEFINING MOMENTS
Jo Miller, Be Leaderly
Friday, June 17
10-11:30 AM

The stakes can be high, but a well-chosen, high-profile role or stretch assignment can be career-defining, and it can propel you to new heights. However, the opportunities you say “no” to can be as career-defining as the ones you accept. In this session, learn to recognize opportunities that showcase your strengths and potential—while artfully declining the ones that don’t—so you’re neither over-stretching nor under-stretching. You’ll walk away with new inspiration for finding your next career-defining opportunity, and executing it like a rock star.

OPTIONAL PRE-WORK EXERCISE

  1. Read this list of 100 leadership qualities. Highlight all of the characteristics you recognize in yourself.
  2. Focusing on your strengths and innate leadership style, select 3 qualities you’d most like to own and be known for 12 months from today. It might help to group similar qualities (such as “Sets the vision” and “Sets the direction”) into one category.
  3. Write down your three leadership strengths and bring them to this session.

Seventy-five admins attended the pre-conference session, Jumpstart Resources, geared toward those who are new to the role or new to Ohio State.
The day kicked-off with a video welcome from President Drake and an inspired keynote by Danielle Revish. Those messages prepared attendees for a day filled with networking and learning.

Keynote Speaker Danielle Revish

The Executive Panel Discussion with Kim Shumate (moderator), Susan Basso, Mike Hofherr, Damon Jaggars and Amanda Lucas provided great insights and practical advice for administrative professionals at Ohio State.

The conference ended with an energizing and motivating presentation by Courtnee Carrigan. The CEO of Raising the Bar, celebrated the contributions of administrative professionals, individually and collectively, with her talk, “YOU are the answer!”
