About Me

My name is Christian Olney, I am a graduate from The Ohio State University who is currently working as an Associate Product Marketing Manager for Avation Medical in the Medical Device industry.

Internship at OrthoPediatrics

My first day as an intern

I interned with OrthoPediatrics the summers of 2019/2020 while also working over the winter of 2019 as a part time employee.

As a an intern at OrthoPediatrics I worked specifically with the planning and execution of a number of projects dealing with medical equipment and its distribution. Specifically, I worked daily communicating and working with the warehouse team including returns, shipping, medical education, and medical device loaners departments. In these departments I was able to work on projects including a cost benefit analysis mapping out an example returns process, a tactical rearrangement based on future projections for over 1,000+ parts for efficiency of the warehouse floor plan, cycle counting over 24,000 parts with the team, and updating all departments to 5S standards.

Skills: Communicating with peers and working effectively with them, Detail Orientated tasks, Professional business tasks (email, excel, word, etc), Planning/projecting/and executing future projects

Located below is a summary of my first summer and many of the projects I had a hand in directing and completing.

Christian O Summer Intern Summary

Intership with Telos LLC

Around March 12th my life changed along with thousands of others.

Covid-19 had hit and I returned home to finish the semester online like countless other students across the country.

Although quarantining was difficult I was lucky that I had a internship waiting for me at the end of May when mandatory isolation was lifted. Orthopediatrics was able to coordinate with a sister company Telos in order to give me an internship to work remotely from home half of the week while working 11 hour shifts the other half of the week in person with them. I was able to work part-time with Telos from May-August of 2020 learning many technical and communicative skills along the way.

In this position I created a research library out of research articles using the software program EndNote cataloging over 2,000 research articles based on a number of factors. In order to allow Telos to easily be able to find and use specific sections of an article to find support for a medical devices use, the articles had to be hand catalogued into this system.
Although this experience was only part-time the skills and proficiency I gained in being able to decipher extremely heavy medical terminology in research along with learning about thousands of different sports based medical procedures and devices was invaluable to my future as a physical therapist.

Skills: Medical Terminology, EndNote research proficiency, adaptability, professionalism

Volunteering at Mid-Ohio Foodbank Update Fall 2019

Every Monday and Wednesday morning 10:00am-12:00pm this spring semester I got the chance to volunteer at the same place that I first visited last year at the neighborhood services Inc. This branch of the mid-Ohio foodbank is my favorite place to volunteer as you get to know the community of neighbors that rely on your help. They are a diverse crowd and have made me a question and learn more about myself every week. I learn more in this experinece then in many of my GE classes. I highly recommend this volunteering opportunity for anyone that hopes to reach out to the community. Martin Butler the manager of this foodbank is an amazing guy who cares about the volunteers and neighbors that are being served. Many of the other volunteers are older and cannot carry as much so I have mostly helped with lifting and moving the heavy food pallets and objects. Listed below are the websites for this company. I can’t wait to continue to help this organization in the coming months when I return to Columbus in the spring after winter break where I will again volunteer on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10-12. This was a fantastic opportunity that taught me how to empathize and care for others and push myself physically and mentally to work for the community.

Peer Mentor

Us out exploring the Columbus Expo center in downtown Columbus!

In the scholars program I was lucky enough to be allowed to obtain the position of peer mentor for the incoming class for Dunn Scholars students.

In this position I was tasked with answering all of the students questions, leading them around campus the first week, and being their guide all semester to all things at OSU. If the student wakes up and is sick and doesn’t know what to do? They call me for advice. If the are trying to schedule their classes and want to know the difficulty and amount of time they will need to put in they talk to their peer mentor.

Shown above is one of the meal outings we had as a group

I was lucky enough to work with 3 other mentors to be in charge of a group of four incoming freshman and help them in the transition from high school to college. Some of the requirements of this position included “family” outings with the other mentors and students, one on one discussions with students in order to connect with them, and social media engagement via GroupMe.

Skills: Leadership, communication, teamwork, and patience.

Neighborhood Services weekly volunteering

Every Monday morning 9:00am-12: 00 pm this spring semester I got the chance to volunteer at the same place that I first visited this past December the neighborhood services Inc. This branch of the mid-Ohio foodbank is an amazing place that many people around the Columbus area rely on for food and supplies every week. Its community of neighbors volunteers and management is such a rare blend of people who care for one another truly. I have seen and learned so much more from this experience volunteering every week. I highly recommend this volunteering opportunity for anyone that hopes to reach out to the community. Martin Butler the manager of this foodbank is an amazing guy who cares about the volunteers and neighbors that are being served. I have highly enjoyed working with him. In this foodbank, I have worked mainly as the muscle. Many of the volunteers are older and cannot carry as much so I have mostly helped with lifting and moving the heavy food pallets and objects. I especially work with packing and organizing the freezers of meat for the neighbors.  Listed below are the websites for this company. I can’t wait to continue to help this organization in the coming months when I return to Columbus in the fall where I will volunteer on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9-12. This was a fantastic opportunity that taught me how to empathize and care for others and push myself physically and mentally to work for the community.

Remember (A short film)

This is a short film that tells the story of a father as he remembers his past experiences. A coming to grips story that shows how grieving the loss of time and experiences occurs. This was made to show that we must treasure the past as it could always disappear as though dust in the wind.

Volunteer December 3rd

On December 3rd, I got the chance to volunteer at a local food bank called Neighborhood Services.

https://www.neighborhoodservicesinc.org/

This food bank has been open since 1962! I volunteered here from 9:00 am -2:30 pm! It was a long day but a great day.

1950 N 4th St E, Columbus, OH 43201

I helped first with sorting and placing all the meat donations received into different freezers. It seems Thanksgiving was especially kind to the food bank as the donations received were far more than normal! I was luckily able to find a cold place to put all of the meat in an intense game of what felt like Jenga! Then I was taught how to walk each neighbor (the person who we give food too) by walking them around the store and showing them what options of food they could have based on their assigned number of people in the family. This was by far my favorite place to volunteer. I got to meet interact and talk to so many different neighbors about their struggles and it was truly a great experience to see how similar they are to everyone else. A lot of times lower income and homeless people are stigmatized and I saw through this volunteering experience that all of these stereotypes were wrong. Everyone I met was very nice and gracious for the help they were receiving. I learned truly how important social interactions for change are to me. I really feed off the energy and it seemed like the day blew past when I was interacting and really making a difference in these peoples lives. Many of these people were deciding between a sharpie marker or a loaf of bread. It truly taught me how vital simple objects like tape and markers are to making you feel human. Because of service learning, I am grateful for all I have.

Volunteer December 1st

On December 1st, I got the opportunity to join other Honors and Scholars students in a Ties for Tots event in which volunteers got to make fleece blankets that will benefit Project Linus and Nationwide Children’s Hospital. From 3 pm to 5 pm at Khun’s Honors and Scholars house, I worked on making a red fleece blanket for a child who is sick during the Christmas season.

This is the blanket I made at the event.

Through this experience, I was able to physically and mentally work through and create something tangible to help a child. It was very tough on my hands and also very monotonous but it was worth it to imagine a lonely child at Nationwide Children’s hospital who would get to have it! I learned through this work that I do enjoy work that is taxing if I can see the product when it is finished. Sometimes projects lead to results that are hard to measure. This project I could actually put my body and mind to work and see the results.

Although taking a long time to make the finished product was a great source of pride!

As a leader I need to learn how to deal with both kind of projects as not all of them will show tangible results. I learned however that I enjoy the activities and volunteer opportunities where I get to help first hand with others. Because of service learning, I am more aware of my strengths and weaknesses.
