Canine Collective Adoption Event 2015

During the cloudy afternoon of September 28th, 2015 I spent my day both learning about 45 mph couch potatoes (greyhounds, in more common terminology) from the Greyhound Rescue and helping to showcase and keep adoptable dogs, from Canine Collective, satisfied and filled with as much levity as possible.

Canine Collective with Crimson 2015

Tending to a tuckered out Husky mix named Crimson.

It was a therapeutic, enlightening event that reminded me of the plight of many rescue animals in terms of adjusting from neglectful or abusive situations into hopefully finding a permanent, able and loving home.  Not only did it provide an excellent pause from the steep adjustment that is freshman year, it reinforced my desire to focus my career into improving the quality and appreciation of animal lives and by extension, human lives as well; it inspired me in a way that was far more direct than my current academic courses.

Year in Review

Fall 2015
This first semester of college has really impacted me in a lot of ways. The experience of being within the Bio Scholars community has really enriched me and let me meet a lot of different people. Coming to college has given me the privilege of rediscovering myself and seeing what I am really made of.

I have seen, over the past few months, study methods excel and fail, and been enlightened as to how large a mountain I must climb to reach my goals. I have gone from someone who balked in the face of slight failure to a more flexible, giving person. The differences in others lives and their own accounts of struggle has also inspired me to actively strive to be a better human being myself, and encouraged me to be willing to at the very least open my mind just a little bit more every day. Despite the setbacks of tougher coursework and the stress of managing one’s own life, I like to think I have become more hardened by the rough patches. I will set loftier goals next semester, but execute them with more finesse. Distractions, small or large, will be set aside in favour of less less temperate issues such as my future career and successes. My pursuit of research will be metered, planned and more fruitful.

Joining an a capella group on campus was a slightly impulsive, if not fruitful, move, which has lead to me also joining an organisation as a chairman of hospitality.

College is indeed a very large playing field, with many obstacles and trials to beset anyone who dare play, but there are various tools set at ones feet if you look hard enough for them.

About Me

My name is Mofopefoluwa Olajide, although I opt to go by the far simpler “Fope”, and I am a Nigerian who was born in Croydon, England. I came to the United States at about two years old, and have lived in four states since arriving in New York. My personality has naturally lent me to being an inquisitive creature, and I spent much of my free time in elementary school reading up on any subject that happened to intrigue me. My interests have always been broad, and I took up several hobbies including singing and artwork, but I always have been most fascinated by animals. I often went on trips to the zoo and to wildlife supported by my after school program in Arizona, which fanned this interest into a burning passion. In high school, I took a keen interest in biology, and found it to be a subject that I was willing to pursue into higher education and use it as a launching pad into research pertaining to my interests in college. However, my ultimate goal is to attend a Veterinary College of Medicine and pursue a multi-faceted career in which I can both travel and improve the lives of animals and by relation, humans, around the globe.
