Executive Board

2022-2024

President

Dr. James Onate, Associate Professor of Health & Rehabilitation Sciences, College of Medicine
onate.2@osu.edu

Dr. Jaime Arturo Oñate is an Associate Professor at The Ohio State University in the College of Medicine’s School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, and is the President of OLE. He is the Director of the Division of Athletic Training education program, as well as a member of the Human Performance Collaborative and Jameson Crane Sports Medicine Institute at OSU. His main research focus is developing human movement and performance science that bridges the gap between research and clinical systems to allow for evidence-based outcomes, with the goal of aiding individuals with sustaining optimal health and performance throughout their careers and lives.

Dr. Oñate is a first-generation US-born Chilean-American whose parents immigrated from Chile in the 1960’s, and who grew up in a household in the 1970’s and 80’s that embraced a Hispanic-Chilean-American culture. He doesn’t know how to dance la cueca, he doesn’t really like Chilean food (except empanadas con queso y camarón), he doesn’t speak Spanish that well (pretty decent Spanglish with my family), and he doesn’t have a whole lot of true Hispanic family in the US or Columbus region. However—one big thing he will add to the end of these statements is “yet”. OLE and the campus of Ohio State is providing the foundation for him to continue to grow and develop throughout his career and lifetime.

Vice President

Dr. Ana Casado, Department of Engineering Education, College of Engineering
casado.1@osu.edu

Ana Casado is the Program Director of the Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program in the College of Medicine, where she works in recruitment, admissions, advisement, and program administration. She also moonlights as a lecturer for the General Education Bookends Courses and the Department of Educational Studies at Ohio State. She has fifteen years of experience in college/university teaching, curriculum and course design, educational consulting, and graduate student support.

Ana is originally from Knoxville, TN and grew up in a household heavily influenced by Cuban and Spanish culture. She grew up speaking, reading, writing, and even cooking in Spanish (especialmente pollo al ajillo, tortilla española, and picadillo cubano). Ana’s father emigrated to the U.S. from Cuba following the 1959 Cuban Revolution. As a journalist in Cuba already in possession of a Master’s degree, Ana’s father worked hard to reinvent himself in the United States, eventually receiving a Master’s degree from the University of Tennessee and becoming a highly respected public school principal, a position he held for over 30 years. He and Ana’s schoolteacher-turned-librarian mother stressed the importance of a college education, as they continuously advised, “Eso nadie te lo puede quitar.” Ana took this to heart, and she received a PhD in biological anthropology from OSU in 2017.

Ana loves living in Columbus with her two boys, Ben and Jack, her cat, Nacho (short for Ignacio), and her dog, Pork Chop. She enjoys swimming, hiking, and reading.
