Increasing and retaining Latinx/Hispanic staff: A follow-up conversation with the OLE community

On March 11, 2021 OLE hosted representatives from OHR’s Talent Acquisition unit to learn about current efforts to increase diversity and make hiring processes more equitable in the university (see a recording of this session).

Now we would like to talk about what initiatives we can create in OLE to focus on the recruitment and retention of Latinx/Hispanic staff. We want you to bring your ideas and experiences as this will help us come up with specific actions we can take to improve outcomes for our community.

When: Wednesday, July 14, 2021
Time: 12:00 – 1:00 p.m.

Racialization and Latinxs: Contemplating Colonial Unknowing

Please join OLÉ for a presentation and discussion by Dr. Luis Urrieta from the University of Texas at Austin.

Latinx communities are complex and vary by geographic region, generational histories, linguistic backgrounds, and political orientations. Yet, single story narratives that racialize Latinxs are often associated with these communities. Single stories often create one-dimensional and superficial views of Latinxs, frequently without histories and usually portrayed as recent and  unwanted arrivals. This talk will engage in unpacking and untangling the roles of colonialism and imperialism in the formation of racialized Latinx identities in the U.S. Colonial unknowing often encourages ignorance of the past, but in this talk we will contemplate how racialization in relation to other forms of oppression influences in contemporary Latinx lives and futures.

Anyone interested in this topic is welcome to join.
Sponsored by OLÉ. Co-organized with EHE’s Department of Educational Studies’ 2020-2021 Diversity Lecture Series.

When: Friday, May 7, 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. EST
Where: Virtual. Please register to attend this virtual event.

Providing Warm Meals During a Chilly Holiday Season

The OLÉ Community Outreach Committee wanted to make sure Latinx/Hispanic families had warm meals this holiday season. Interim Community Outreach Committee leader and OLÉ Treasurer Ivette Diaz worked in collaboration with Our Lady of Guadalupe Center and Barroluco Argentine Comfort Food to provide free holiday meals to 30 Latinx/Hispanic families in the Columbus area.

Barroluco Meals for Community Outreach Event

Meals catered by Barroluco for 30 Columbus Latinx/Hispanic families.

Each meal fed a family of 5 to 8 people, and consisted of a chicken dish and sides. The hot meals were catered and delivered by Barroluco Argentine Comfort Food. The meals were delivered on Epiphany Day and were accompanied by a holiday card from OLÉ.

All of the families who received complimentary dinners are considered low-income households. The families have been affected by recent lay-offs, impacted by COVID, pregnant mothers, and/or come to the Our Lady of Guadalupe Center food pantry. OLÉ is proud to make an impact on our local community, especially during difficult economic times.

Want to help engage with our Latinx/Hispanic neighbors? Consider volunteering for the OLÉ Community Outreach committee. Email OR-latinxstaff@osu.edu for more information.
