Recurring Projects

Ohio Staters, Inc. sponsors many projects that are re-scoped and are able to occur every year. These projects include:

Founder’s Day, September 17th

Founders Day is a yearly celebration of Ohio State history. Each year, Staters works alongside University Archives to commemorate a different component of OSU history, planning a single-day event on campus that engages students in meaningful and enjoyable ways to learn more about the buckeye legacy.

Light Up The Lake, December

Light Up the Lake is the signature tradition of hanging seasonal lights around the Mirror Lake Hollow in hopes of bringing the Ohio State community together and brighten campus during the winter season. LUTL includes ceremony of student group performances, followed by attendees joining in a rendition of Carmen Ohio, and then the lighting of the Mirror Lake Hollow. Last year we partnered with Theme Park Engineering Group to enhance our tradition by doing a light show, and we are now brainstorming how we can build off of this for this winter!

Omens of the Oval, October

Omens of the Oval is an event presented by Ohio Staters at the end of October where ghost tours of the oval are presented. Around campus, there are numerous stories of supernatural ghosts and other oddities which have been recorded over the past 150 years. We will share these tales and pair them with tours of Orton Bell Tower, which itself has some spooky stories.

Presidential Portrait

When a new university president is inaugurated, OSI hosts a ceremony with the Board of Trustees, Office of the President, and various student organization leaders to present a portrait that will be hung in University Hall. In Spring 2024, we will be holding an event to honor President Walter ‘Ted’ Carter Jr.

Sibs and Kids Weekend, March

Sibs and Kids Weekend is a project in which Ohio Staters creates a program to engage siblings and families visiting campus with some element of campus – whether it be dipping chocolate buckeyes, coloring pictures of Brutus, running through a trivia-laden maze, or creating Buckeye necklaces, there is fun for all to be had.

Oval Beach, April

This is a new project, scoped by Maelyn Cheng, that brings back the tradition of “Oval Beach” to Buckeye students. It will include food trucks, games, and many more activities, and we plan to host the first annual Oval Beach in spring semester 2023. The plan is to hold the event before finals week to give the students a break before exams.

In addition to the specific projects, Ohio Staters, Inc. sponsors many First Year Success Series and STEP Professional Development Co-Circulars as well as sponsors a number of scholarship opportunities for Ohio State students.
