Kick-off, Resources, and Raffle Tickets

Hello PeDa1ers! I hope you are having a great Friday!

We are planning a fun kick off based on the old Hollywood Squares game show.

  • If you would like to participate, please let Teresa (osupiio@osumc.edu) know.
  • We are looking at a May date – but it is not yet set in stone.
  • We have some Pelotonia folks who have volunteered.
  • We would like to make this a fund raiser – but I need some help figuring that out. Please share any ideas! 🙂

The PeDa1ers can win a $1,000 bonus if we bring in 10 or more riders between April 12-25.

  • This money will go to the peloton and then be shared evenly at the end of the fundraising time.

It’s time for Team Buckeye Raffle Tickets again!

  • Please let me know how many you would like, and Teresa will order them for you.
  • Then you can pick them up from her office. (Or you can order yourself)
  • If you like, Teresa will also take care of turning in tickets and monies, but she must receive them by August 16th.

Fundraising Events

Upcoming Peloton Fundraisers

  1. Change jars – If you would like a change jar to post at your favorite restaurant, regular gas station, church, gym, etc. Let Teresa know and she will get one for you.
  2. Be looking through that stuff you have tucked away in the closets, attic or garage. Sell it at our online silent auction to support our Pelotonia fundraising.
  3. Have a great skill (like Mohamed who bakes wonderful cakes)? These sell at the silent auction as well.
  4. Have some really cool art work? Really cool science pictures?  We are planning an art auction as well to help you raise funds.

Be creative! Send a brief description and a nice photo to Teresa so that she can get the information together for these auctions.

The Art Sale will be in June and the Silent Auction will be in July. Don’t wait until the last minute. And don’t forget to talk it up with your friends and family, post on social media, and even get donations of items from businesses you regularly frequent.

Did you check out the Team Buckeye Asset kit?

Add one of these to your signature line and show your support while encouraging folks to donate to you. Don’t forget to provide a link to your profile or to this website  for donations.

Start fundraising now for yourself.

If you are interested in placing a “change” collection jar at your favorite restaurant, convenience store, or other business – ask them. When you get permission let Teresa know and she will get you a OH! IO PeDa1ers branded jar to use. Then you just have to empty it once a week, turn the change into dollars (coinstar kiosk search), and then turn the money into Teresa to get to Pelotonia for you. Teresa will be placing a change jar in our kitchen area on the BRT 5th floor as well.

Today is the day of giving….

It is a great time to make your Pelotonia ask. Check out our previous post with a sample letter and start sending out emails.

You can do this! We have faith in your commitment to your research, to helping others. Give your friends, family, acquaintances, businesses a chance to do the same!

FYI:

Pelotonia  added three new blogs to serve as resources for our community and answer frequently asked questions that are received ahead of Ride weekend. Check them out below:

Have you made your your ask yet? Invited someone to join us?

Wow there is so much going on right now! I hope this message finds you well.

Take a deep breath! Go on…. it’s okay.  Vaccines are happening, Pelotonia 2021 is happening, and there is light at the end of the tunnel!

I have 3 main topics today.

  1. It’s time to make your ask. Do you have a plan? March 22nd is right around the corner and is the Day of Giving. What a great day to send your Pelotonia ask.  Send it now or on the 21st or even the morning of the 22nd (use that “send later feature in our Outlook” and watch the donations come in after that. Don’t know how to ask? Check out our recent post with a sample ask letter. (But don’t forget to have your thank-yous ready!) Want to know more about day of giving? Read more »
  2. Have you invited someone to join our peloton? Why in the world not? 🙂  If you want to have even more fun – recruit your friends to join you and make a party out of it! Don’t forget – each new rider automatically gets a $50 donation from Captain Zihai. Create a joint “ask letter” and send it out together. This doesn’t have to be a “socially distanced” thing – zoom and work together – be creative.
  3. Are you talking Pelotonia up? Do your friends or family even know anything about it? Talk about it; post about it; tweet it; instagram it; facebook it; whatever you do – get the word out there. Show that your Pelotonia pride. More than that – be proud of the work you do! You ARE awesome!

Please share….

Captain, Dr. Zihai Li has pledged a $50 donation to the next 20 riders to sign up before the end of March.

Please encourage your friends, family, coworkers to join our peloton.

Need some social media help? A banner? It’s all available.

Keep PeDa1ing!

Sample email/letter:

I am excited to share that I am participating in Pelotonia this year as a__________.

Founded in 2008, Pelotonia was established with the objective to fund innovative cancer research and has grown into a global event. To date, Pelotonia has raised more than $217 million for cancer research and directs 100% of every participant-raised dollar to cancer research at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC). The OSU community is especially proud that Pelotonia pledged $102,265,000 in 2019 to launch the OSUCCC Pelotonia Institute for Immuno-Oncology (PIIO). This is where I work! We are a bench-to-bedside research initiative focused on harnessing the body’s immune system to fight cancer. You can learn more about the PIIO and Pelotonia’s lifetime impact at Pelotonia.org/Our-Impact.

And we are going to keep on PeDa1ing! I am fortunate to work alongside colleagues, researchers, staff, and students who are passionate about their work toward a cancer cure in the PIIO and the OSUCCC.  PIIO members come from 11 of the 15 OSU colleges and all share a commitment to creating a cancer-free world, one person and one discovery at a time; I am honored and very proud to have the opportunity to support our peloton and the Pelotonia team!

Don’t forget that every single dollar we raise is invested in the brightest minds in cancer research (including me ) who are making cancer therapies less toxic and more effective for patients. From increasing cancer prevention and early detection methods to creating new drugs that are in use today – Pelotonia dollars are truly saving lives.

I’m proud to ask for your support of my fundraising goal knowing that Pelotonia directs 100% of every dollar raised by its participants to innovative cancer research at the OSUCCC-James.

You may not realize this, but both my father and grandfather died from cancer, and two years ago, I fought my own cancer battle. I hope you will consider making a donation by following this link to my profile page at  https://pelotonia.org/profile/(Add in your ID number)  or through the OH!IO PeDa1ers peloton page.

Sincerely,

Thank yous:

  • Are THE 2nd MOST IMPORTANT part of your fundraising and sets the stage for repeat donations each year.
  • Determine if you will send thanks upon receipt of the donation (keep a stack handy or an email template thank you) or all at once after the ride. (Maybe both?)
  • Don’t forget, if you share your donation list with the Administrator, the Captain of OH!IO PeDa1ers will send a thank you as well.
  • Using your list from above, mark off names as you send your asks, receive donations, and send your thank yous.

So you want to be an IO PD1?

Just a quick note:

IO = Immuno-Oncology

PD1 (programmed cell death protein 1) = has a role in regulating our body’s immune system’s response to infection and/or cancer. There is a whole lot more to the science of it, but I am not a scientist!

We just want to eradicate cancer. We hope you will join our peloton to raise funds for cancer research too!
