Midline Triangle Area

In a △ABC, D is the midpoint of AB; E is the midpoint of DB; and F is the midpoint of BC. If the area of △ABC is 96, then the area of △AEF is:

  1. 16
  2. 24
  3. 32
  4. 36
  5. 48

Show/Hide Solution

If you halve the base and don’t change the altitude, you halve the area.

△ABC: 96
△ABF: 48 (base is BC)
△DBF: 24; also △ADF (base is AB)
△DEF: 12 (base is DB)
△AEF = △ADF + △DEF = 24 + 12 = 36. Answer (d).
