Miller, Pounds and Kilos

A Dutch miller keeps 1/10 of the grain he grinds as his fee. How many pounds of grain must Henk de Bruyn take to the miller so that he will come home with exactly 100 kilos of ground grain?

Show/Hide Solution

Henk takes x pounds and he wants to have 100 kilos to take home.

If the miller takes 10%, Henk keeps 90%.
So if Henk brings k kilos (we’ll convert to pounds later), then

0.9k = 100, k = 100/.9 = 111 1/9 kilos

Each kilo is 2.2 pounds, so Henk has to take 111 1/9 x 2.2 ≈ 244.4 pounds of grain.
