Adams Will

Mr. Adams left $1872 in his will, with the instructions that it was to be divided among his widow, 3 sons, and 2 daughters. The widow’s share amounted to 3 times the amount that either of the daughters received, and each son got just half as much as each daughter. Find out how much each person got.

Show/Hide Solution

w = 3d, s = d/2

w + d + d + s + s + s = 1872
→ 3d + d + d + d/2 + d/2 + d/2 = 1872
→ 6.5d = 1872
d = 288
w = 3 · 288 = 864
and s = 288/2 = 144.

Check: 864 + 288 + 288 + 144 + 144 + 144 = 1872
