Barbecue Bricks Weight

Stella’s student Jasper is building a barbecue out of bricks. Each brick measures 9 inches by 2 inches by 4 inches. He will use 1200 bricks to do the job. A cubic foot of bricks weighs 95 pounds. What will the bricks for Jasper’s barbecue weigh?

Show/Hide Solution

Volume of 1 brick = 3/4 x 1/6 x 1/3 = 1/24 cubic foot.
Volume of 1200 bricks = 1200 x 1/24 = 50 cubic feet.
Weight of 1200 bricks = 50 x 95 = 4750 pounds.

Jason’s muscles will grow as he builds this barbecue.

Note: Stella and her student live in Amsterdam. Holland is a metric country. So why are all of these measurements in “English” units? Why were they converted from metric? Perhaps you would like to re-cast this problem in its original metric form.
