G.O.A.L.S.

While at OSU, I want to accomplish my G.O.A.L.S. during my freshman year and throughout my four years.

For Global Awareness, this year I will attend online webinars about diversity, inclusion, cultural awareness, racism, and other topics to learn more about what is happening in the world and see things from other people’s perspectives. By graduation, I will have studied abroad somewhere in Europe so I can immerse myself in a culture different from the one I grew up in and learn about a different part of the world.

For Original Inquiry, by the end of my first year I will find a topic I want to do a research project on, one that I can state a problem and find a solution for. By graduation, I will have created a research project with my topic, and also have done coursework outside my normal semester courses relating to the topic.

For Academic Enrichment, at the end of my first year at OSU I will have achieved at least a 3.5 GPA both semesters and create lasting academic relationships with my professors. By graduation, I will have taken as many rigorous and advanced courses as possible, and made sure to push myself to choose the most academically challenging courses when I was given the choice.

For Leadership Development, by the end of my first year I will develop my leadership skills through my clubs and activities like CCWA and Model UN. I will work on taking the lead in every opportunity given and work on my public speaking skills so I can better communicate when in leadership positions. By graduation, I will have become one of the leaders of my club in any aspect, and have joined other organizations that I also have a leadership position in.

For Service Engagement, I will volunteer at some event in the OSU community throughout my first year so I am exposed to the service opportunities and am able to give back to those in need. By graduation, I will have participated in some kind of Service Trip through one of my previous volunteer opportunities or a new one to give back to my community or one around the country.

About Me

Hello! My name is Chloe O’Connor, and I am so happy to be in the Politics, Society, and Law Scholars program at The Ohio State University. I am from Naperville, Illinois, which is a suburb 45 minutes outside of Chicago. I played lacrosse throughout high school, as well as participated in leadership opportunities and volunteering. I loved going to all of the sports games at my high school, so I am very excited for sports here at OSU!

I am majoring in Economics in the College of Arts and Sciences, and would love to use this major to have a career in politics and government! I am really passionate about politics, economic policy, foreign policy and affairs, and security and intelligence. In my free time I love hanging out with friends and family, watching some TV classics like Friends or New Girl, or hanging out outside! I am already so happy at The Ohio State University and I can’t wait for all of the fun experiences to come.

Mentor Interview

I had my Mentor Interview with one of my PSL mentors, Lauren Welch. We met up on Thursday, August 27th outside of Mirror Lake Eatery. The view of Mirror Lake was so pretty and there is benches everywhere so we were able to easily find somewhere to sit. We introduced ourselves and talked about where each of us were from, our majors, our interests and hobbies, and a bunch of other things. I started asking her questions about her experience at OSU, like how she liked her professors and the courses she took freshman year. Then I asked about PSL and what she enjoyed most about it. She said she really liked the field trips the cohort went on throughout the year, and she said she was sad that we can’t go on those trips during first semester. I found out that she is an economics major like me, except she is doing hers through the business school and mine is through the College of Arts and Sciences. We talked about economics courses and the level of difficulty here at OSU, and also discussed other courses we have to take. It was such a nice conversation and I learned a ton of helpful information from Lauren! I was really glad to have reached out to her and gotten to know her better so I know someone in the 2nd year cohort. I think this “assignment” was really fun and I enjoyed getting to know one of my PSL mentors better!
