Year in Review

I grew tremendously during my first year at Ohio State, especially academically. I learned how to really study and that the amount of work required to succeed is much more than what was required to succeed in high school. Since starting freshman year, my goals have changed from being perfect to being the best possible version of myself. This goal applies to my academics, professional life, and personal life.

My current long term goal is to complete medical school, but short term my goal is to put my best effort into everything I do. I believe that if I do this, it will help my achieve my long term goal. To achieve these goals this past year, I improved my study habits and adjusted my work ethic from first to second semester. This change was reflected in my GPA, which improved significantly from first to second semester. This summer, I plan to take classes and volunteer to help me achieve my long term goal.

Artifacts

A specific experience that taught me more about my academic and career interests was the free health screening put on by Universal Health Aid Columbus, a student organization I am involved in on campus. We spent the entire first-semester planning and preparing for one day where we worked to provide free healthcare to an underserved population within the Columbus community. Taking part in this experience helped me discover my passion for public health and serving those less fortunate than myself. I have decided to major in public health with a specialization in sociology, which will allow me to better understand the health disparities that exist within the United States. This health screening experience helped me recognize the passion I have for fighting inequality and how that transfers into my coursework and future career.

About Me

Hi everyone! My name is Kayla O’Callahan and I’m from Cleveland, OH. My major is molecular genetics on a pre-med pathway with a minor in Spanish. I am also a part of the Health Science Scholars program. After undergraduate school, I plan to pursue a joint MD-PhD Program and work in oncology/cancer research. In my free time I enjoy watching Netflix (Friends and Grey’s Anatomy), reading, hanging out with friends, and spending time outside! Some of my favorite classes in high school included Chemistry, Anatomy & Physiology, Statistics, and Literature! I hope to continue to take classes similar to these here at OSU. I was also involved in several sports/clubs at my high school, including Key Club, NHS, Spanish Club, Student Council, and Soccer! I hope to join several student organizations throughout my four years here and stay involved within the school and community. I am so excited to be a student here at OSU this year!
