Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. G.O.A.L.S.

As an undergraduate student, I plan to demonstrate global awareness by studying abroad and experiencing new cultures I have never seen before. Also, I hope to do research in advertising as a communication major. I believe that by doing this I will be experiencing original inquiry.

In addition, although I am a communications major, I hope to pursue a minor in history. By doing this, I am dedicating majority of my time to my studies, thereby demonstrating academic enrichment.

As for developing my leadership skills, I am a member of the Mount Leadership Society Scholars. The main goal of this program is to help students become the best leaders they can be. In this program, there is a major focus on service work. Each month I am asked to do one service event. It can vary from picking up trash after a football game or volunteering at a handicap basketball tournament.

Overall, I am constantly dedicating myself to helping community and the larger population.

Career

[“Career” is where you can collect information about your experiences and skills that will apply to your future career.  Like your resume, this is information that will evolve over time and should be continually updated.   For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. Artifacts

In the age of information, I can carry thousands of pictures around in one electronic device. While this advancement is groundbreaking, I will always love physical photographs.

Back home, I have an abundance of photo albums stuffed with pictures of my family aging back to my great grandmother’s childhood. I love the pictures in black and white. There is something classic and timeless about colorless prints. My fascination with photographs caused me to buy a gigantic photo album. I filled it with pictures from the 1940s-2000s. Today, there are still empty pages in the album. This was intentional because my life is still progressing and there are moments to be captured in the future.

The album is my artifact. It serves as a chronicle of my life and the lives of the people most important to me. It’s a reminder of where I came from which is why it’s very precious to me.

About Me

My name is Charlie O’Brien and I am currently a first year student at The Ohio State University. I grew up in Westfield, New Jersey and attended Westfield High School. Throughout my high school experience, I worked with various clubs and organizations. I’m a strong supporter of education and served as the co-president of the Westfield High School Girl’s Learn International Chapter. I spent seven years working with this organization to raise money and awareness for schools in third world countries. The main focus was providing young girls the opportunity to learn. In addition, I ran cross country on the varsity team for four years. I was voted my senior captain for a team of over 120 runners. I graduated with honor roll and I am excited to start my experience as a Buckeye!

I am a now a student in the College of Arts and Sciences majoring in communication studies. Also, I plan to minor in History with a focus on World War II studies. As a  member of the Mount Leadership Society Scholars , I am dedicating myself to service and involving myself in the Ohio State community. In addition, I am a member of the OSU Relay For Life marketing committee. Helping the fight against cancer has been a passion of mine since my Grandmother was diagnosed. As a result, I relay for LeeRae O’Brien.

Hopefully, by the time I graduate I will have studied abroad as much as possible so that I might experience new cultures on a global scale.  After graduating, I intend to apply to a graduate program. Eventually, I plan to travel as much as possible and then settle and work in New York City.
