Adjø Oslo!

To start our final day in Oslo, we practiced our final presentations. We then assembled in an auditorium and presented our community health projects to the entire COIL program, including the Norwegian and US students that were watching via Zoom. It was so interesting to see how each group chose their topics and the differences in healthcare for marginalized groups between Norway and the US.

The SDG for this day is #17- “Partnership for the Goals”. The cooperation between Norwegian and American students to collectively select a healthcare problem and decide on an intervention shows the global partnership in bettering the world. This gives the world hope that our generation has the ability and desire to work together to become better as a whole, rather than compete with each other. Through this project, I can see how this generation in these two nations yearn toward world peace and health equality.

Omsorg + Fun!

Day 7

As usual, we started the day strong at Espresso House. After navigating the bus system, we arrived at Omsorg Plus and engaged in a quick debrief, discussing the nature of the healthcare system in Norway compared to the States. While some of us assisted with waffle making for the residents, a few others and I opted for touching up the landscaping. This also allowed us to take advantage of the nice weather!

Today’s activities depicted the sustainable development goal #11 (sustainable cities and communities). By improving the green areas around the community, we create an accessible and safe place for the elders to enjoy. This can in turn help their mental health and wellbeing by spending more time outside. Now that we helped the community sustainability through landscaping, engaging with the residents, and helping coordinate meals, we can enjoy the weekend off with our free time!

Day 1

We made it to Norway! It is officially day 1 of the trip! The day was started with a delicious pastry from the coffee shop below our hotel. We were pleasantly surprised with a Saturday market featuring local businesses ranging from fresh-pressed juices to hand-woven sweaters and precious jewelry. This took place on the street directly outside of our hotel (Cochs Pensjonat). It was an all-day event, so we could even take a nap and catch up on sleep, then continue to browse if we wanted. This was the perfect opportunity to stroll and immerse in the culture with a coffee and pastry!

This market absolutely depicts the sustainable cities and communities SDG. It offers financial support to the locals, fosters an environment of socializing and interaction, and encourages walking and exercise (these hills are no joke). All of these factors creates a city that promotes healthy and sustainable living for the Oslo community.
