Semi-Rigid Cervical Collars
- Prefabricated device that wraps around the neck
Control Function
- Some restriction of forward flexion/ extension and to a lesser degree lateral flexion and rotation
- Kinesthetic reminder of injury
Indications for Brace: each brace has different indications for use
Philadelphia Collar:
- Used while awaiting results of cervical spine films
- Can be worn in the shower
Miami J Collar:
- Used with cervical fracture that is non operative or does not require Halo for stabilization
- also used with patients with questionalbe ligamentous injury
- cannot be worn in shower
- Fit of the collar:
- The chin is not able to slide inside the collar or does not go over the edge of the collar
- The opening in the middle of the front of the collar is centered on your neck
- No plastic is touching you skin. Only the blue pads should touch your skin
- Care of the collar:
- Do not use powder or lotion under the collar
- Keep the skin clean and dry under and around the collar
- Daily change the blue pads-a second pair of pads comes with each collar-wash dirty blue pads in soap and water and air dry for following day (hold C-Spine immobilization) while changing pads
- Check skin QD for redness or Pressure injury
- When patient is laying on their back the bed should be flat with no pillows under their head
