Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. G.O.A.L.S.

Global awareness is an aspect of everyday life that I believe is very important in this day and age. With the education gained through my studies, it is crucial to be aware of the problems that I will need to apply my knowledge to. This can be accomplished by remaining vigilante with global issues as well as those occurring in our communities. I will strive to understand our differences and learn to utilize them in tackling these issues with the collective of different perspectives gained. Through courses and discussion-based classes, new perspectives are bound to arise, which will help me shape my own personal experiences with the lessons taught.

While learning in a classroom setting is great, I believe it is crucial to discover new things on our own in order to expand upon our knowledge and understanding. I look forward to developing new information through research-based on genetics or within my advanced coursework. With possible hands on experience in labs of professionals at the top of their field, the chance of being apart of new discoveries is something I will want to pursue.

I am looking to major in Molecular Genetics with a possible minor in Nutrition. I chose to major in Molecular Genetics because it’s a field that I am extremely interested in. I want to learn more about the complexities of the human genome and the possibilities that it holds. I want to study the interplay of our genes and the effects that occur when we alter them. I may be pursuing a minor in Nutrition as it’s another field I find particularly interesting. By having a Nutrition minor and being an honors student, I will be able to diversify myself when applying to graduate school. As of now, I am planning on my career to be in Genetic Counseling, which requires at least a 2 year masters program. I’m looking forward to challenging courses that will prepare me for a successful career and employment in Genetic Counseling.

Throughout college, I will actively seek out leadership positions. I have already taken steps to become more involved in my clubs. I hope to become a board member for the Boo Radley Society sometime within my years at OSU. In class work and projects I try to initiate conversation and lead discussion. By working with others in planning and collaborating, I will be developing skills that will be used in career settings.

For service engagement I look forward to participating in many volunteering opportunities through the Boo Radley Society and HeForShe, as well as philanthropy in BuckeyeThon. Focusing on HeForShe, I think that volunteering at local women’s shelters will have a huge impact on my understanding of the social issues facing women, not just in our area, but in our nation. I am just ready to help out my community in any chance I get because it not only helps those around me, but it also develops connections and life experiences that I will carry with me.
