All about me (second semester)

Hey fellow OSU peers!

I am Kimberly Nimoh and I am a first-year and first-generation student at OSU. I am excited to be a neuroscience major with a pre-med track! My first semester was not that tough until the final exams. However, I was happy with my grades for the first semester while I was on the Rugby team. This semester has been very stressful with my classes to the point I have been able to find my strength and weaknesses in my study skills. It is a good thing for the most part, but it is very stressful to change your study habits every two seconds.

Moreover, in the light of things I have made new friends and participated in a protest a week ago, fighting for an organization called “USG” to recognize “Black History Month.” It is the first protest I have ever been a part of, and it is the greatest decision I have ever made to go there. I met many new friends and current friends who shared their personal thoughts on the issue and how that has impacted their lives. On that day, we had made history to change legislation that was written by the USG to make diversity and inclusion OFFICIAL!

Throughout this semester, I hope to acquire various new skills and traits that will help me be successful in the future, so I can officially become a leader and win some awards. Also, I hope to maintain a 3.7 GPA or higher throughout my years at college. This semester has taught me discipline, and I have realized that my major requires a lot of HARD WORK.

My first semester at OSU

My first semester at OSU had its ups and downs, from feeling totally lost on campus to making friends and joining the Women’s Club Rugby team and other various organizations. My classes were very rigorous and challenging at times, but the resources available to me at OSU had a positive impact on my academics. What I enjoyed about my first semester the most is the community that surrounded me and the mental freedom I got, as I lived most of my life on campus. However, preparing for final exams was the worst of it because everything became hectic and disorganized. It was very hard to keep up with all the assignments and study for the finals, but I loved the challenge of getting as much work done as I possible. No matter the challenges I faced at OSU, my first semester has been a big change for great oppertunities.

Where am I from?

I am from Los Angeles California, but my culture and background are from West Africa. My family is from a small town called Ejisu at Kumasi in Ghana. Though my family was separated before I was even old enough to talk, my Ghanaian culture and background has helped me form a community in Ohio with people from the same country. Till’ this day, the friends that I have made have become my new family in Ohio. The transition from Africa to Ohio was a big change for me because I was unfamiliar with diversity and culture, and in my mindset, I thought everyone understood multiple languages no matter your race. Hence, why I spoke my home language to everyone I met, not knowing they wouldn’t understand. As I grew up to learn the English language, I was able to assimilate myself into the American culture, quicker than I imagined I would. I have spent more years in America than in Africa, so many people (who are not Ghanaian) have a hard time understanding how I am African American at times.

Furthermore, the first sport I learned to love was football and this has greatly shaped who I am today. From playing football in elementary school to high school (with all boys), it has shaped my athletic mindset and ability as I formed an addiction to anything sports-related. This has helped me develop useful skills such as strength, determination, and uniqueness. Till this day, I do not know what I would be doing if I didn’t have an interest in sports because it is what keeps me active and determined in my life. I didn’t find it hard to enjoy the foods that Americans eat as it looked appealing and tasted amazing, so I caught on pretty quickly. At the end of high school, I found my interest in medicine, as I learned in-depth about the human body and how doctors and nurses save people’s lives in the career of medicine.  I haven’t changed my mind about my major or career goal ever since.

Lastly, unlike many people, I didn’t experience culture shock or xenophobia due to my young age. However, I am still contemplating if I want to go back to Ghana because I hardly knew anyone I lived with. Also, I would rather travel to other countries that I am unfamiliar with because I haven’t been to any other country but the US ever since I came here, so I would love to visit other countries to experience how other cultures are like as I am old enough to understand.

My first week at OSU

During my first week at OSU, I have been able to take charge of my own life and responsibilities. I was able to learn so much about the campus during orientation and welcome week. I am most excited about being able to get more involved on campus because I was not able to do so in high school, due to the strict regulations imposed by my mom.  On the first day of school I was able to find my classes quickly due to the help of upperclassmen and the OSU app. Not being able to make it to class on time is what worried me the most.

Furthermore, I am able to be myself and take the courses that will benefit me in my neuroscience major for pre-med. Growing up I have always wanted to save lives and I found most of my interest in medicine. I made my mind that I wanted to be a surgeon so I can help those in the most need.  I am looking forward to enjoying my 4 years of college and discovering so many aspects in humanities.

Lastly, though it is hard to get involved as a commuter I enjoy the atmosphere and environment of OSU as a place I can call a second home. The home that will shape 4 years of my life.
