Columbus To-Do part 2

For the second half of my Columbus to do adventure I decided to visit a few places in the short north area of High Street including Simply Rolled Ice Cream and the Zen Cha Tea Salon. Originally I went to Simply Rolled Ice Cream to support my friend who is a member of the pre-dent club here at Ohio State. However, I’m ashamed to say that I have been back quite a few time since then. They had a few rolled ice cream places in the area I live in, but I always saw it as a novelty and as nothing special. Let me tell you, though it really is. You go in, choose your toppings and it is all made right in front of you, almost like a cold stone (if you know what that is). I’m not a huge fan of sweet things, but I LOVE dark chocolate and coconut. So I chose the coconut ash ice cream, with chocolate fudge, brownie pieces, and dark chocolate chips. The ice cream is extremely soft and good and I really recommend it.

I also visited the Zen Cha Tea Salon a few feet down the road. Now, as someone who is an absolute tea and coffee snob, I thought this place was so fantastic and cool. There is nothing like sitting down with a nice hot cup Earl Grey Tea on a cold November day, which is exactly what I did. From what I gather they also have food and occasionally have live music, something I am eager to go back and try the next time I venture to the Short North district. Overall, the place was very cozy and had a great ambiance and I look forward to going back sometime soon.

Overall, I really enjoyed the Columbus to-do list and I look forward to trying other things on this list as I continue to expand my realm here in Columbus. I’m excited for when I have a car here and am able to venture more forward the city, but until then I will continue to crawl up and down High Street and Lane Avenue. I think my favorite discovery when exploring was definitely Kafe Kerouac, and I honestly think Ive made the trek there more times than I’d like to admit. All I can say is I recommend that everyone get out of their dorm, off campus, and explore the world arrounf them because there are some real reassures around OSU, from Candado to Cazuelas and everything in between. Explore!

Columbus to do 1

For my Columbus To-Do list, I’ve chosen Coffee and Tea. I figured that this would be the best choice because I would be the most motivated to visit these places. I love both coffee and tea and I’m looking forward to trying all the different blends and hopefully I will find a little hole in the wall. I think this assignment will help me get off campus and explore more areas hat I haven’t been to yet, as well as give me an excuse to feed my caffeine addiction. So far, I have only visited Kafe Kerouac, a grungy and underground feeling coffee bar on North High Street. The literature themed cafe isn’t just a coffee shop, however, it also sells used books, comics, records, as well as hosting multiple live acts a week. While there, I usually order what is slowly becoming one of my favorite drinks, the Franz Kafka, A peppermint infused late with extra foam. Since then I have been back multiple times. I have found hat it is a very nice place to study and really has that “living room” feel that a lot of Starbucks’ used to have but have been slowly been loosing as old ones get renovated. I also went there late one Thursday nigh on a whim and ended up watching one of the coffee shops’ free concerts with a local band. Overall, Kafe Kerouac is quickly becoming one of my favorite spots on campus and I cannot wait to continue going there.

Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. Alumni Interview

For my Alumni Interview assignment, I chose to interview Alexa Prass graduate in Biology who also minored in Public Health, a major that I am extremely interested in. In her time here at OSU, she took many life science and public health classes and realized that she has a passion for Dietetics, though she believed it was too late to study this in undergrad and has recently decided that she wishes to go back for a Masters Degree in Public Health in Dietetics, with her dream college being the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. While at OSU she was involved in ENR, which she loved and says that she regrets not being more involved with it, Collegiate 4H, and the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation. Since graduating, she worked in a juice bar in Columbus, worked as a nanny in Texas, and now is working as a dietary aide at a living facility for adults with intellectual disabilities as well as teaches a cooking class for children. Though she says her early jobs were less than professional, she believe that the experience she gained from them helped to guide her to her real passion and helped her gain some useful experience in the field that will give her an advantage when applying to grad school. Her ultimate goal is to become a registered dietician who works with individuals living with Celiac Disease, something that Alexa personally struggles with. Her advice? Build relationships with anyone and everyone. Your peers, your advisors in clubs, and your professors. Go to office hours, ask questions, and get to know your professors. This will help you get internships, TA positions, and even letters of recommendation. Get involved and make some memories! Personally, I think these are some amazing and helpful tips and I look forward to implementing them into my collegiate life. She said to remember that school work is important, but so is having fun so let go a little from time to time, a suggestion that I believe everyone should live by.

About Me

Hey y’all, my name is Max Nicolaus and I’m an Evolution and Ecology major at THE Ohio State University (though I am considering double majoring in Zoology). I was born and grew up in a small town just outside of Cincinnati called Batavia where I was part of a small graduating class of 148 students. Some of my favorite things to do include reading, drawing, singing, and hanging out with other people. I like to think I’m a pretty laid back person; I’m the type who just enjoys talking to and getting to know others! I consider myself to be a very hands-on and visual learner, and it is my dream to work one-on-one with animals in some capacity. Currently, I am not sure of what I want to do with my degree, but I am hoping to work alongside animals in species conservation. I actually think that insects are extremely cool and would love to take an entomology course while I am here at Ohio State; maybe I could use my experience from that course to aid in species conversation. However, my absolute favorite animal is the Blue Tounged Skink and I had the chance to interact with one at the Cincinnati Zoo last spring. I hope  that, within the Environmental and Natural Resources Scholars, I am hoping to learn how to live more sustainably and to find potential careers that utilize my environmental interests. As stated above, I am very interested in the conservation of species and I am hoping that, by learning to live more sustainably, I will be able to find ways to preserve the habitats of the same species that I am trying to conserve.
