Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness

I have taken Spanish for three years in high school and plan to continue my education in the language and culture. I hope to study abroad in Spain during my time at Ohio State.

Original Inquiry

Two summers ago I had an internship with a startup in Cincinnati, Ohio called Aquiire. This company had a product that helped customers buy supplies in bulk at the lowest prices. There, I evaluated customer data to report problems to the development team. This also involved creating macros to automate data management tasks.

While I am at OSU I hope to participate in undergraduate research. I would love to be at the forefront of one of the multitudes of new technologies that come out every day.

Academic Enrichment

I chose to major in Computer and Information Sciences because I know this will give me the most necessary knowledge for my career in technology. In the arts and sciences program, I will be learning about many different subjects to give me a well-rounded education. I hope to work for a company with humanitarian benefits so I will be looking into minors that would help enrich these goals.

This semester I am taking Physics 1250 (Mechanical, Waves, and Thermodynamics) because I know it will provide me with the problem-solving skills I need to succeed in my field. I am also Calculus III and Software I. One of my most interesting (and unexpected) classes is my first-year seminar about mass incarceration. I love the ability to reflect on history and think critically about how the world around us can be improved.

Leadership and Development

After only four weeks of being at OSU, I was asked to take on a leadership position in the student organization “Code 4 Community”. There, we are making a mental health app as well as creating school outreach programs. My job is to help with member retention by reaching out to students and making sure they are comfortable in the club. I also bring a “new member” perspective to the team at leadership meetings.

Over the past year, I have been the Social Media Manager for The INTERalliance of Greater Cincinnati. This non-profit helps high school students make professional connections with technology companies in the Cincinnati area. I helped lead and run TechOlympics- the nation’s largest high school technology conference. I also ran five social media platforms marketing all INTERalliance events including competitions, workshops, job shadowings, camps, internships, and TechOlympics.

I would describe myself as an inclusive leader, always making sure to remember the perspective of each team member. I have worked hard to be as personable of a leader as possible.

Service Engagement

Over my senior year of high school, I volunteered for over 200 hours and received the United Nations Community Service Honor Award. While pursuing my degree, I plan to continue this service with activities such as Code 4 Community. I won the NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing Ohio Affiliate Winner and am now recognized as a member of this community, so I also plan on teaching coding classes to students in the Columbus area through the National Center for Women in Technology.

Hannah is a first-year Computer and Information Science major here at The Ohio State University. She has had two previous internships with Aquiire (a Cincinnati startup) as a data analyst, and Kroger Technology as a web developer. She is very excited to be a part of the Amazon Future Engineer program that guarantees her a software engineering internship with Amazon in the summer of 2020. Hannah has special interests in mental health advocacy and teaching younger students. She hopes to use her skills in computer science to continue seeing the difference she is making in the lives of others.
