G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness: I have a very high interest in studying abroad. I know that there is one specific to the Molecular Genetics major that takes place in Norway that I believe I can take part in by junior year, but I also want to explore other options so that I can see more of the world. I really enjoy studying Europe during the Renaissance period so I’d like to take a course on that and maybe even follow that up with a study abroad trip to study the Renaissance.

Original Inquiry: I hope to reach out to a professor by the end of freshman year to start research opportunities. I think the lab experience early on will be extremely valuable and help get me understand more about my intended field of study. I want to take part in some creative productions while I’m a student at OSU, although I don’t know a lot about the theatre environment here. I know that there’s Off the Lake Productions which I might look into, but also the official OSU Department of Theatre productions. I do plan to take research coursework in the Molecular Genetics major, but I’m not sure which course I’m going to take just yet.

Academic Enrichment: I have a strong interest in genetics and its future in the world, which is why I chose it as a major. The GE’s I’ve taken this semester reflect my interest in the study of human psychology and morality. I find both these fields very interesting to discuss and insightful about understanding the world around me. I intend on continuing my study of social psychology so I might pick up a minor during my college career. I’m currently taking two honors courses, one of which is at the 3000 level, and enjoy both of them a lot.

Leadership Development: I’m currently involved in Painting with Bob Ross Club, the Molecular Genetics Club, Backburners Sketch Comedy, and the Protection and Awareness of Endangered Species Club. I intend on making a new club at OSU by the beginning of sophomore year which is a soap making club. Most of the activities that I take part in are related to personal interests of mine and things that I’m passionate about, rather than completely academic. I think my leadership style is I can connect with people on the individual level, which helps me lead the group as a whole.

Service Engagement: Molecular Genetics Club and the Protection and Awareness of Endangered Species Club both have service opportunities to take part in. The club I’m planning to start is also service oriented. I want to take an active role in helping my new community through the various organizations I’m part of. I want to volunteer at a local cat shelter sometime during my freshman year because I care about cats a lot (also dogs, but cats hold a special place in my heart), and I think it’s important that shelters have volunteers to help out.

About Me

Hi! My name is Trevor Nguyen, and I’m a Molecular Genetics major in the class of ’23. I’m from Mason, Ohio, the oldest of three, and the first to go to college in my family. I’m a STEM scholar through and through, but I also love the study of social psychology.
