Is the English Major Right for Me?

We could take up your entire day telling you how great our English department is. From our brilliant faculty and staff that take a true interest in their students to the thoughtful, inviting conversations that take place in the classroom, the English department allows students to explore not only their interests — but themselves. English allows you to expand upon your writing and analysis skills, but, more importantly, literature gives us the opportunity to see the world around us in a new way.

But, instead of taking our word for it, see what our English students have to say about their beloved work!

After starting out as a business major, I spent so much time trying to find my place. Nothing felt right, I was missing the opportunity to explore my more creative side, and all the numbers were getting scarier and scarier. However, after some time away, I decided to start as an English major and have never looked back. I will always be so incredibly thankful for all the professors who pushed me to try things outside of my comfort zone and encouraged me to grow as a writer and as a person. I have learned so much and have found so much joy in my experience creating with the English department at OSU Newark!

Part of what makes our English department so great is the relationships that develop between faculty and students. The small campus and small class sizes means that the professors get to know their students on a personal level, and out of that, our professors take a personal interest in the development and success of their students. The English faculty at Newark go above and beyond for their students, helping them discover their true passions, seeking out internship opportunities, and doing everything they can to support students to find their future careers.

I really love the English department because we really are one big family on a smaller campus. Thr English professors really take us under their wing and want us to succeed. I have met my really good friends through the English department; we support and encourage each other to do our absolute best everyday!
