Creative Writing Minor

Would you love to cultivate your own storytelling craft? Adding the Creative Writing minor will allow students to develop their own creative voice while gaining the skills to create original literary works; all while expanding on the analytical and writings skills you already have!

You can tailor the creative writing minor to your interests by choosing to focus in fiction, poetry, creative non-fiction, or a combination of all three.

The minor consists of four undergraduate courses for a minimum of 12 total credit hours.

Requirements

  • 2 courses in creative writing at the 2000-level
    • Choose from English 2265 (fiction), 2266 (poetry), and 2268 (creative nonfiction), all offered on the Newark campus
      • Students are encouraged to take courses in two of the three creative writing genres (fiction, poetry, creative writing) to complete this portion of the minor
  • 2 courses in creative writing at the 3000-level or higher
    • Choose from English 3465 (fiction)*, 3466 (poetry)*, 3468 (creative nonfiction)*, 3662 (literary publishing)*, 4565 (fiction), 4566 (poetry), 4568 (creative nonfiction), 4590.01H (special topics in the study of creative writing)*
    • 3000- and 4000-level courses are repeatable
    • Admission to 4000-level courses is competitive. To apply for admission, email a sample of your writing to the instructor and request permission to enroll in the course

The creative writing minor can be completed at Ohio State’s Newark campus.
