Welcome!

In Cultures of Professional Writing, you will work both individually and collaboratively to

  • familiarize yourself with some of the forms of and outlets for writing common in contemporary worlds of work
  • understand how writing operates in a variety of workplaces
  • enhance your professional writing skills and writing accuracy

We examine writing in various workplaces, analyze writing discourse that shapes professional organizations, and explore ongoing technological and cultural shifts required of workplace writers and the role of digital media.

As an upper-level course, this is largely a hands-on, how-to class, with individual and group work on a variety of writing projects enhanced with readings to teach you skills of real-world, 21st century writing, including how to let the world know about you and your skills. We’ll have discussions and hear from a variety of outside speakers, but there will also be significant time when we’ll be looking at your drafts of various kinds.
