As the Barclay’s Premier League continues to dominate top-tier soccer, with a multitude of teams always vying for the league title, which as we speak is being bitterly fought between a select group of elite teams. As more and more players, now a majority, being non-English players, the English game is appearing as a more international game where over 40% have made international appearances we must beg the question: what is happening to youth academies? As this article discusses, the challenges for a young academy player to someday make a cap for his club is simply near impossible, with them being more likely exported to a lower level league or just being shut out of professional football due to this influx of internationals. Looking in the long-term situation, this could weaken England’s international might as a soccer powerhouse, due to the lack of opportunities for fledgling players to have their turn on the field, creating a gap in talent for many years to come, unless the Three Lions find a way to promote nationals in a hyper-competitive soccer atmosphere where top slots seemingly always go to foreigners, from Aguerro to Van Persie. Can England come back? Only time will tell.
