Badge 14 – Micro Teaching #1

ENCOMPASSES BADGES 17, 16, & 20

Badge 14: Micro Teaching

For our the Micro Teaching assignment our group decided to research and present on “Augmented Reality” or AR.  Through our research, planning and exploration, we discovered that “Augmented Reality” is basically a way to overlay data or information on top of the virtual experience of our environment using mobile technology.  This is something that has been used in the marketing and PR world for a little bit of time now but through the power of new apps and accessible technology it is being applied to Education.

We we’re able to share with the class many examples of apps and resources available to not only experience AR first hand, but to also be able to create their own AR experience for what ever application suits them.

Working with Rachel and David on this project was also a great experience.  I think we mad a really good team and leveraged one another skills to the fullest, bring together more of an experienced based presentation for our micro teaching focused on ANALYZING and EVALUATING augmented reality with some hands on apps.  As a group we meet both virtually and in person several times to plan out this project. This really benefited us and gave us the opportunity to collaborate and share our personal experiences and thoughts on Augmented Reality in the Classroom and ultimately divide and concur all the different parts of the project.

Badge 17: Video

With our micro-teaching I was able to incorporate video in the creation of our Auras or AR images. Filming at the Denny one touch studio our group was able to meet and record the clips describing how blooms could be applied with AR in the classroom.  Once recorded I was then able to edit the video in Apples Motion creating some basic animation and graphics to highlight the different levels of blooms. Once edited I was then able to upload the videos to both Arasma for our AR experience as well as to a youtube playlist for a more traditional experience.

Badge 16: Content Curation

Uploading these videos to Youtube and Aurasma allows me to apply for badge 16 Content Curation.  I use YouTube quite a bit for a lot of my content curation by creating specific youtube channels that I can then organize with playlist classified by subject matter. this is a great way to sort and organize not only my media content but other publicly available media as well, to make it easy to navigate and find.  I Often times also use iTunes-U in conjunction with youtube to curate additional content or resources that I can then share both publicly or privately to others.

Badge 20: Mobile Learning

Lastly this brings me to my application for Badge 20: Mobile Learning.  With our Micro teacher on AR we demonstrated on our iPhones and iPads how to use the AR apps to experience AR in the palm of your hands.  In order to experience AR you need some type of mobile device to interact with your environment. You can create AR experiences with a desktop or laptop but to to get the true AR experience you need some sort of mobile device with a camera that can view your environment and display it with information or media over top of it. in real time.

Ultimately our group micro teaching was a great experience, giving me the opportunity to explore and experiment with augmented reality and share and learn from others in the class how this might be applied or adapted to be successful in the classroom.  I think we all cam to a consensus that AR will be seen more and more in the classroom but is still several years off from becoming a common application or technology in education.
