Personal Development

Throughout the course of the semester I have grown to be more independent and confident in who I am as a person. While being here I have been away from the ease and comfort of the support system of my family and surrounding community. The absence of this support system has had a role in the growth of who I am as a person. Throughout high school I had poor study habits and depended on my parents to take care of logistical aspects of my life. It was a concern coming into college that I would not be able to adapt and learn how to navigate through life on my own. I have come to learn where, how, and with who I am able to study and retain information. I have learned about the time commitment  I must address in order to remain successful in life. In addition to the new study techniques I have acquired, I have begun to branch out to be a more independent adult. I have scheduled my own doctor visits and taken control over some logistical aspects of schooling such as paperwork. I am able to travel about the city of Columbus on my own and enrich my knowledge of the community around me. The increase in independence and awareness of my study habits has not only allowed me to excel inside of the classroom but outside of it as well. I feel that I am able to meet new people and explore many cultures and ideas than I was previously able to. Through the enrichment of these aspects of my life I have grown to be a more confident version of myself, and in turn I have come to love the person I am growing to be.

Exploring

I recently visited the Wexner Center for the Arts and had the opportunity to see Mickalene Thomas’ “I Can’t See You Without Me” exhibit. While viewing the marvelous pieces in her collection, I realized that there is so much that I want to explore. Columbus alone has so many different cultures and places that I cannot wait to experience. Taking in all of the differences and unique attributes from around me will enrich my appreciation for the life I am living.

Influential Experience

For the past five years I have been involved in a program known as Youth to Youth. It is a drug prevention and mental health awareness program that focuses on youth led prevention. In this program I have been a participant and I have also been in a leadership role as a Youth staff member. Throughout these years I have build friendships and focused on educating those around me through youth led prevention methods. This experience has been important to me because it not only gave me some of the best relationships of my life, but it helped shape me into who I am today. The values I hold such as integrity and accountability have been instilled in me through this program. It has prepared me with presentation skills as I have presented in front of an international conference of youth, and it has taught me to be open minded on several different topics as many different types of people are brought together. I am now able to hold conversations with those different from me, facilitate small groups, present in front of large groups, and connect with the world around me. I owe a lot of the growth of who I am today to Youth to Youth.

About Me

Hi! My name is Talia Naylor and I am a student here at The Ohio State University. My intended major is Engineering, however I am undeclared in regards to what field I plan on going into. My entire life I have always been told that I am the queen of “why?” Finding out how things function and what their purpose is has always been an interest of mine. In the future I want to work to help those who are at disadvantages. I want to help pave a path of equal opportunity for anyone who wants the chance to try and explore outside of their comfort zone. Solving complex problems is another activity that I enjoy taking part in, and I believe that this will be a valuable asset during my journey.
