Selected Presentations

Below, I have provided selected presentations from my work as an instructional designer in the Office of Distance Education and eLearning and from my graduate program in the Department of Evolution, Ecology, and Organismal Biology.

CONFERENCE PRESENTATIONS

Association for Educational and Communications Technology (AECT) Conference

In October 2019, I traveled to Las Vegas, Nevada to present two different sessions around the ODEE course quality initiative and improving our video services process.

Online Course Quality

The online course quality presentation discussed the creation of our ODEE course quality rubric, recent efforts to socialize the rubric, and plans for assessment with the rubric. I also presented this session, as an invited speaker, at Indiana University’s Online Education Conference in October 2019, too.

Instructional Design-Focused Video Production Services for Online Faculty

In this presentation, I discussed our efforts to improve ODEE’s video production services model, showcased some example video productions, and described our future assessment plans for our video production.

Innovate 2019 Conference

In May 2019, I presented with Ross Tamburro, Jen Plahovisak, and Robert J. Weber around the innovative course design work in two Pharmacy programs: The MS with a specialization in Health-System Pharmacy Administration and The Master of Science in Translational Pharmacology. Ross and I worked to develop several interactive branching scenario activities for Pharmacy 8170, Pharmacy 7562, and Pharmacy 5010. In this presentation, we defined what branching activities are, how they can be used to enhance engagement and interactivity, and how they can help shift your teaching towards a more applied focus.

OLC Accelerate Conference

In November 2018, Ross Tamburro and I traveled to the Online Learning Consortium’s Accelerate Conference to present on the work we did to develop a multimedia learning object for BMI 7810: Design and Methodological Approaches in Biomedical Informatics. In this presentation, we described the project from inception to fruition in addition to the planned means of evaluating the final deliverable’s efficacy.

ODEE WORKSHOP PRESENTATIONS

Kickstart Week

The Distance Education Teaching and Learning Academy (DELTA) hosts a week-long professional development workshop that covers the basics of best practices in course design and teaching online three times per year. Since the May 2018 offering, I, along with DE educational technologist Ross Tamburro, have been presenting on developing engaging activities such as branching activities in the course design.

Digital Flagship Educators Cohort

In May 2018, The Digital Flagship team within the Office of Distance Education and eLearning hosted the inaugural Digital Flagship Educators Cohort. This cohort receives training “to enable excellent teaching that incorporates active learning, student-centered course design, and digital literacy development” (Digital Flagship Educators Cohort). I was invited to present on my experiences designing iPad-enabled activities in two biology courses that I had previously taught. I developed two presentations based on implementing iPads in the lab and in the field.

Distance Education Professional Development Corner

During my course developments in Spring 2018, I embarked on an ambitious journey with faculty instructors for BMI 7810 and our educational technologist, Ross Tamburro, to develop a large-scale module to teach data literacy. This project included the production of two interactive, multimedia learning objects. Ross and I thought that describing the essential pieces to making a project like this come together should be shared out with the team as a professional development opportunity.

GRADUATE SCHOOL PRESENTATIONS

MS in EEOB Thesis Exit Seminar

In my exit seminar, I discuss the work I did as two case studies addressing the call to action of theĀ Vision & Change report.
