G.O.A.L.S.

GOALS is an acronym used to aid Honors and Scholars students by giving them things to strive towards achieving, during their years at Ohio State. The acronym for GOALS stands for: global awareness, original inquiry, academic enrichment, leadership development, and service engagement. Each of these terms are all things that can benefit a person and make them stand out above the many other students. There will be many other people applying to grad schools and for jobs, so what will make a person stand out from the rest and be unique from the others. The ‘G’ in GOALS stands for global awareness. Global awareness is an appreciation for the world and the diverse cultures that is has. This is knowing more about the world and it’s unique aspects. Ways that students can take advantage of this is by studying abroad or getting involved in clubs/organizations that are involved in cultural awareness. The ‘O’ in GOALS stands for original inquiry. Original inquiry is understanding and getting involved in research. This can be broad, all the way from in class projects to working with researchers. This can be research at the university or in a community. The ‘A’ in GOALS stands for academic enrichment. Academic enrichment is where students push themselves to take harder courses at the university, and apply themselves more in and out of the classroom by working harder in understanding the information being taught in those classes. The ‘L’ in GOALS stands for leadership development. Leadership development can be skills that can be shown inside of a classroom, in a community, co-curriculars, and future roles that they will obtain. The ‘S’ in GOALS stands for service engagement. Service engagement is when students are able to provide service to a community.

Personally, I have been most involved in academic enrichment and service management. I have taken on a rigorous coursework for my first semester in college, and I have applied myself to each course. Ensuring that I am understanding the information taught in each class. The scholars program requires a minimum of 10 hours of service for the first semester. Outside of participating in service through the scholars program, I regularly volunteer at many local food banks near my home.

After my first year, I plan on getting involved in the other three categories more seriously: global awareness, original inquiry, and leadership development. I would love to have the chance to travel abroad in the future, to continue my schooling while exploring and learning about a new country at the same time. I want to build a resume to get the chance to participate in research in an actual lab. I plan on taking on leadership roles in clubs and organizations here on campus.

Artifacts

The artifact that I chose is my diploma from graduating high school. Looking back, one of the proudest moments of my life is graduating from high school. It was always a goal of mine to earn my diploma from high school, but I also was proud of the other achievements that came along with it. I felt that I grew the most, as a person, during my years in high school. I was able to create relationships that will last a lifetime, some with students from my school, and others with the teachers and staff at the school. I learned many early life lessons that I plan on carrying with my throughout my life. Along with earning my diploma came many challenges. I had to focus on maintaining a healthy lifestyle. This includes maintaining and creating friendships, participating in extracurriculars, focusing on my education, and working. There were times when it was not easy, life seemed very hard and confusing at moments. Now I have my diploma to look at and reflect on all that I have accomplished so far in my life, and how much more I am capable of accomplishing in the years to come.
