Interpreted Journey

Summary

Recreate your Journey to Treasure project, but interpret it through a different lens. Draw on a 14×17 inch drawing pad, do not use color.

Reflection

Challenging myself by using pen for the first time.

Before this, I have never used pen in a piece and I wanted to improve on learning the skill for the future of my design career. I have been improving drastically in my visual arts skills and this felt like the next logical step. I first sketched out everything with pencil, very lightly, and planned to keep pencil in the overall work, instead incorporating pen rather than fully depending on it. After the sketch was complete, I practiced penwork on a separate piece of drawing pad making sure I was able to recreate the feeling I wanted to emphasize the proper mood in the project. Overall, the look turned out great and I was very happy with it.

An interpretation of being chased and use of cinematographic tools.

Researching different framing and cinematographic tools was a large part of this project, and I used a lot of them throughout my composition. Starting in the upper left frame I used the over-the shoulder technique, the next frame on the top using a canted angle. The third frame uses a combination of the rule of thirds and golden triangle, the fourth frame using golden triangle as well. The fifth frame uses a closer shot from a worm’s eye view contrasted starkly against the final frames bird’s eye view and Fibonacci spiral. All these different effects on composition were in an attempt to create a feeling of urgency and movement. The interpretation of my journey I chose was being chased, but I didn’t want the classing “runner vs. pursuer” scenario so I changed it up. I still had the classic “runner” but instead of a pursuer, I had several figures continually appear, motionless, like a hoard or a hive mind. It added an extra element of mystery and helplessness (especially in the final frame where countless people are standing around the runner).
