Becoming a STEM EE Scholars Peer Teaching Assistant
I was contacted by Program Coordinator Jorge Eduardo who asked me if I was interested in being a Peer TA for my STEM scholars program. I immediately accepted and have enjoyed being a resource for first year scholars as they make the transition into their collegiate career, offering helpful advice as well as connecting them to faculty and upperclassmen here at Ohio State. It has been extremely rewarding to give back to the program that I learned so much from in my first two years. Through this experience I gained valuable experience of teaching in post-secondary education, which I anticipate continuing in graduate school.
I have been given several responsibilities as Jorge Eduardo’s teaching assistant this semester. So far I have learned how to balance my teaching responsibilities with my own personal academic goals. I have enjoyed reading the various assigned papers and responding to each student with personalized comments, intended to help improve the first years writing ability. In class, I assist Jorge Eduardo with lectures, answering the students’ questions and helping clarify confusing concepts covered in the main lecture. I was asked to give a lesson on Diversity in the STEM EE fields and it’s important. I spoke to the class about the specific challenges of increasing diversity in neurology specifically and articulated the importance of expanding the cultural competence of neurology. Following this summarization, I facilitated a conversation with the class about their personal experiences of diversity in their STEM classes. Overall, being a STEM Teaching Assistant has been a rewarding and enlightening experience.
