Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. G.O.A.L.S.

  • Global Awareness: I have completed two courses in the Psychology department here at Ohio State, and I am currently enrolled in another. These courses , Introduction to Psychology, Introduction to Social Psychology, and Adolescent Psychology, have all included the diversity of people and their experiences in some form. Of course, they discuss diversity in the context of psychology, or how the different cultures and ideas people are exposed to affects the way they think, but the the discussion have still allowed me to see how diversity can allow for a problem to be approached in many different ways and allow for new ideas to be formulated that otherwise would not be in its absence. I am not planning on studying abroad, but I do not believe that one must go to a foreign place to experience diversity. The people I have met on campus just in the last couple weeks have probably made up the most diverse group I have ever experienced. Going forward, I hope to continue meeting people from many different backgrounds and better understand the benefits of diversity.
  • Original Inquiry: One of my main goals during my time here at OSU is to be involved with undergraduate research. My current career plan is to be a researcher for a university or private company. By getting into undergraduate research, I will be able to evaluate whether I should continue with my career plan and deepen my understanding on what exactly research entails. I hope to get involved in the physics department, but I am open to research in any department. A research endeavor I have recently became aware of here at Ohio State is quantum cognition. I am interested in this research because it involves two of my fields of interest, psychology and physics. I hope to reach out to the researchers studying this after I better understand the principles of quantum physics.
  • Academic Enrichment: I hope to enrich my academic experience here at Ohio State University through participation in undergraduate organizations like Society os Physics Students and Sigma Pi Sigma, the physics honor society. These two groups bring in professors and graduate students to speak about their research at Ohio State. By attending their meetings, I can see how the things I learn in class can be applied to research as well as better understanding the type of research is done in the field of physics. The groups also have events wherein members can converse and create relationships. This is helpful to my academics as different members of the groups are at different stages of their college careers, allowing me to further deepen my understanding of concepts of physics through conversation with upperclassmen. I hope to become involved in the casual debate club as well in future semesters to allow me to develop my conversational and persuasion skills. I was unfortunately unable to be a part of this organization this semester as they meet the same time as athletic band.
  • Leadership Development: I hope to develop my leadership skills through involvement in different groups. The athletic band, for example, has a student council that helps plan events, lead their instrument section, and generally helps run the band. This council was introduced this year, and I am only a first year, so I hope that in the future, I can be nominated to this council and use it to increase my leadership and organizational abilities. I also hope to use different group work in the class, like the group presentations in Adolescent Psychology class and labs in physics, to develop my ability to lead while also not taking control.
  • Service Engagement: I am not currently involved with any service opportunities here at The Ohio State University. Going forward, however, I would love to be involved in the service dog training that occurs here on campus. I am interested in the this because it would allow me to help others and interact with dogs, one of my favorite activities. I would also be open to become a member of almost any service group on campus, as I find helping other people in any way can be a very fulfilling experience.

Artifacts

[Artifacts are the items you consider to be representative of your academic interests and achievements. For each entry, include both an artifact and a detailed annotation.  An annotation includes both a description of the artifact and a reflection on why it is important to you, what you learned, and what it means for your next steps.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen.
