About Me

Prior to attending The Ohio State University, I attended a small-town high school in “that state up North” that consistently placed in the top three percent best performing public schools in the nation.  The rigorous academics in high school prepared me well for a higher education. Back home, I live on a small homestead with my mom, dad, animals, and brother, Joel–a Musical Composition major at Western Michigan University.  My collegiate goals at OSU include majoring in Interior Design, minoring in Dance and Leadership Studies, and being highly involved around campus, through Rock City church, and in the Dunn Sports and Wellness Scholars program.  The arts have always been an important part of my life through the community that I was raised in, dance, and my family.  These reasons are inevitably how the arts have become a passion of mine that I aim to continue through my higher education.

Year in Review

I am extremely grateful for everything that Brendan, Abigail, and this program have provided me.  As a dancer, I came to Ohio State with the idea that rec sports was going to facilitate my passion for the arts; however, over past two years the program has done so much more for me.  Dunn Sport and Wellness Scholars provided me access to all the right people who then introduced me to opportunities for leadership, rec sports, and the nine dimensions of wellness.  As a second year student the professional development activities assisted me in discovering more about myself and my identity.  Those discoveries were what led me to the design program and my fellow scholars were a great support through the application process.  Happily, I can say that after a year of long hours and demanding work, I have been accepted into the Interior Design program.  Even though I am a design major and love what I do, I work in the Recreational Sports Department offices.  My work experience there has caused me to seriously consider pursuing my masters in Higher Education and Student Affairs and possibly a career in recreational sports.  Even more importantly, Dunn Scholars has given me some of the greatest friends I could ever ask for—everyone from my freshman year suite, to the four ladies who I am living with next year.  They have challenged me to be the best student, friend, and Christian that I can possibly be. Dunn Scholars has made me more excited about my future and continuously prouder to be a Buckeye.

Artifacts

My first week on campus was packed with events held by Dunn Sport and Wellness Scholars as well as the University.  One of those events was the President’s Convocation for the first year students.  At Convocation, each attendee received a white envelope that contained a block O pin and a scarlet and gray graduation tassel.  During the ceremony, President Drake told us to use the tassel and pin as inspiration in the ensuing years of our education.  He told us that there will be many times when we will feel discouraged, but the end goal of graduating from The Ohio State University is an honor and a privilege that we all should hold onto even during our most difficult academic times.

These two items have become very important to me as a new college student.  During my first week on campus, I was still very unsure about my decision to attend here.  I also had very little confidence in my ability to succeed at such a reputable school.  Thankfully, those two items became the inspiration that I needed and that President Drake intended them to be.  They’re a constant reminder that I was accepted to this university for a reason and although I initially had my doubts, I now know that this is the best possible institution for me.

Being given those items and closing the Convocation ceremony by singing Carmen Ohio, further solidified my opinion of the wonderful community and pride at this school.  I could not be prouder to be a Buckeye.
