The Experience of Writing My First Article

Constructing my first article proved to be more challenging than I had originally thought, but I am pretty satisfied with the outcome. It took me some time to come up with a story idea that I was happy with, but I eventually found a story on D-Tix that I felt would be interesting. I knew from the beginning that the hardest part of the process for me would be interviewing people, as I’m not typically an outgoing person and talking to strangers is often difficult for me. At first, I felt uncomfortable stopping people in the Union to talk to them, but when they were friendly, it helped me to relax. As far as the writing process, the most difficult part for me was figuring out what to include and what not to include in the article. Initially, I left out information about the D-Tix lottery system and how it worked, as I didn’t want the story to only be about that. I wanted the focus to be solely on student reaction to the new system and how it is working compared to the old way. However, after Nicole returned the edited article to me, she pointed out that it wasn’t clear what the story was about because it wasn’t unclear what the D-Tix lottery is. So the two main things I feel I need to focus on moving forward are knowing what information the reader wants and needs to know and becoming more comfortable with interviewing people.

The iPad was very helpful in putting together my story. Using Pages, I typed out all my interview questions, a story outline, and the story itself. The iPad is also much more mobile than a laptop, making it easier to take pictures and record audio. The only part of the process that the iPad made difficult was the actual writing of the story because the keyboard is hard to type on quickly. Once I got the bluetooth keyboard for the iPad, typing became much easier. Even though this is just my first story, I can already see that the iPad can be a useful tool for journalism.
