Participating in statewide lepidopteran moth trapping network

I am participating in the statewide moth trapping network that monitors key pests in agronomic crops which are reported through the Crop Observation and Recommendation Network (CORN).  We are currently trapping for True Armyworm, Black Cutworm and have setup traps for European Corn Borer.

Lunch and Learn, Feb 24: Ohio eFields Program and On-farm Research

Join us from 12:00 to 2:00 pm on February 24 for lunch and a learning opportunity to find out more about on-farm research in Ohio.  Meeting location is the Rural Services Building, 225 Underwood St, Zanesville.

Elizabeth Hawkins, Field Specialist, Agronomic Systems with Ohio State University Extension will be joining us by ZOOM. Elizabeth will be sharing about the E-Fields program and On-Farm Research.

2023 Small Farm Conference and Trade Show

Ohio State University Extension is hosting a Small Farm Conference in Mansfield Ohio on March 11, 2023.  The theme for this year’s Mid-Ohio Small Farm Conference is “Sowing Seeds for Success.”

Conference session topics are geared to beginning and small farm owners as well as to farms looking to diversify their operation.  There will be five different conference tracks including: Farm Office, Horticulture and Produce Production, Livestock, Agritourism/ Marketing, Natural Resources.

Some conference topic highlights include: How to purchase our family farm, food animal processing, bee keeping, sweet corn, blueberry and pumpkin production, small ruminant nutrition, agritourism laws, fruit tree pruning and cut flower diseases.

Anyone interested in developing, growing or diversifying their small farm is invited to attend including market gardeners, farmers market vendors, and anyone interested in small farm living.

Attendees will have the opportunity to browse a trade show featuring the newest and most innovative ideas and services for their farming operation. The conference provides an opportunity to talk with the vendors and network with others.

The Conference will take place from 8:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. at the Mansfield OSU Campus in Ovalwood Hall, just minutes from I-71 and US Rt 30.

3rd Annual Virtual Corn College and Soybean School

Due to popular demand, the AgCrops Team will host the 3rd annual virtual Corn College and Soybean School on February 10, 2023 from 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM featuring your OSU Extension state specialists and soil fertility guest speaker, Dr. Kurt Steinke, from Michigan State University. CCA CEUs will be available during the live presentations.

Lunch and Learn: Pizza, Pop and Profit

Back again in 2023 OSU Extension and SWCD will host a noon-time lunch opportunity with guest speakers on topics in agricultural management.  January 20, Jenni Fridgen, Graduate Research Assistant with Plant and Soil Sciences at the University of Kentucky will be joining us by ZOOM. Jenni will be sharing about nutrition on low P testing fields. The University of Kentucky has an ongoing 6 year study managing Phosphorus on low testing fields. She will also be able to address questions on grid soil sampling.

Master Gardener Volunteer Training in 2023

Zanesville, OH–Registration is currently open for anyone interested in becoming a Master Gardener Volunteer in Muskingum County. OSU Extension Muskingum County will be conducting the training course which is offered in two formats: conventional classroom style or online web-based classroom. Participants may choose whichever format best fits their learning goals. The basic premise of the Master Gardener Volunteer program is to provide training in horticulture to interested volunteers in exchange for 50 hours of horticulture service back to the community. Training will begin on February 9, 2023, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm for conventional classroom instruction and on the same day for online classroom instruction. The Master Gardener Volunteer program in Ohio has existed since the late 1970’s and has had a presence in Muskingum County since 1996.

Pesticide Applicator Exam Training Session January 17, 2023

A pesticide applicator exam training session will be offered on January 17, 2023, 6:00 PM, at the Rural Services Building.  In order to obtain a Private Pesticide Applicator License, individuals must pass the exam which is administered by the Ohio Department of Agriculture.  Those who wish to use Restricted Use Products (ODA List) must acquire an applicators license to purchase and apply product. This training is intended to provide an overview of the concepts presented in the exam as preparation.  To register for this exam training session please email martin.2422@osu.edu or call 740-454-0144.
