Back again in 2023 OSU Extension and SWCD will host a noon-time lunch opportunity with guest speakers on topics in agricultural management. January 20, Jenni Fridgen, Graduate Research Assistant with Plant and Soil Sciences at the University of Kentucky will be joining us by ZOOM. Jenni will be sharing about nutrition on low P testing fields. The University of Kentucky has an ongoing 6 year study managing Phosphorus on low testing fields. She will also be able to address questions on grid soil sampling.

Master Gardener Volunteer Training in 2023
Zanesville, OH–Registration is currently open for anyone interested in becoming a Master Gardener Volunteer in Muskingum County. OSU Extension Muskingum County will be conducting the training course which is offered in two formats: conventional classroom style or online web-based classroom. Participants may choose whichever format best fits their learning goals. The basic premise of the Master Gardener Volunteer program is to provide training in horticulture to interested volunteers in exchange for 50 hours of horticulture service back to the community. Training will begin on February 9, 2023, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm for conventional classroom instruction and on the same day for online classroom instruction. Program cost is $115. Applications are available online at muskingum.osu.edu/mgv or at the Muskingum County Extension Office, 225 Underwood St, Zanesville. The Master Gardener Volunteer program in Ohio has existed since the late 1970’s and has had a presence in Muskingum County since 1996.

In order to obtain a Private Pesticide Applicator License, individuals must pass the exam which is administered by the Ohio Department of Agriculture. Those who wish to use Restricted Use Products (ODA List) must acquire an applicators license to purchase and apply product. This training is intended to provide an overview of the concepts presented in the exam as preparation. To register for this exam training session please email martin.2422@osu.edu or call 740-454-0144.
Following this training session, the Ohio Department of Agriculture will be present at the Rural Services Building to administer the exam on:

Using the Corn Nitrogen Rate Calculator
Throughout this winter meeting season, fertilizer has been a hot topic. Generally, the discussion has been around nitrogen price and availability. Most of us have little to no influence on price or availability, but as a farmer, you decide your corn (and wheat) nitrogen rates, assuming you can get the nitrogen product you want. Your corn nitrogen rate could likely cost $100 per acre more in 2022 as compared to the year prior and nitrogen will probably surpass seed as the most expensive variable cost per acre this year.

Agricultural Fertilizer Applicator Certification Training and Testing Option
Fertilizer applicator certification began in 2014. The agricultural fertilizer applicator certificate is required by the Ohio Department of Agriculture when you apply fertilizer to more than 50 acres of agricultural production. Agricultural production is defined as grain, forage, and other cash crops grown primarily for sale. Both horticultural and agronomic crops are included under this law.
