Are you selling beef animals to be harvested for meat and need to update your Beef Quality Assurance Certification?

The goal of the Ohio Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) program is to increase the competitive base for marketing Ohio cattle. Beef Quality Assurance is a program to ensure that beef and dairy cattle are maintained in a manner which will result in a safe and wholesome beef product for the consumer.  The Ohio BQA program is set to meet or exceed the NCBA BQA Guidelines.

Attending this session will allow you to obtain the Ohio Beef Quality Assurance certificate or renew your existing certificate.  Certificates are good for three years.

Two sessions for certification will be available this winter and held at Muskingum Livestock Auction:

Lunch and Learn: Pizza, Pop and Profit

Back again in 2023 OSU Extension and SWCD will host a noon-time lunch opportunity with guest speakers on topics in agricultural management.  January 20, Jenni Fridgen, Graduate Research Assistant with Plant and Soil Sciences at the University of Kentucky will be joining us by ZOOM. Jenni will be sharing about nutrition on low P testing fields. The University of Kentucky has an ongoing 6 year study managing Phosphorus on low testing fields. She will also be able to address questions on grid soil sampling.

Pesticide Applicator Exam Training Session January 17, 2023

A pesticide applicator exam training session will be offered on January 17, 2023, 6:00 PM, at the Rural Services Building.  In order to obtain a Private Pesticide Applicator License, individuals must pass the exam which is administered by the Ohio Department of Agriculture.  Those who wish to use Restricted Use Products (ODA List) must acquire an applicators license to purchase and apply product. This training is intended to provide an overview of the concepts presented in the exam as preparation.  To register for this exam training session please email martin.2422@osu.edu or call 740-454-0144.

 

Following this training session, the Ohio Department of Agriculture will be present at the Rural Services Building to administer the exam on:

Ohio Beef School Webinars Start January 11

The OSU Extension Beef Team is offering a Virtual Beef School with one webinar per month beginning next week and concluding in April. The first webinar features new OSU Extension Farm Management Field Specialist, Eric Richer who will be discussing agricultural input costs in 2023. The second topic of the evening will be Cattle Markets and Outlook presented by Garth Ruff, OSU Extension Beef Cattle Field Specialist at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 11, 2023.

The next three sessions are as follows:

February 8 – Managing Reproduction. Presynchronization and Improving Fertility of Beef Cows: Alex Crist, OSU Animal Science and Synchronization and Natural Service: Dean Kreager, OSU Extension.

March 8 – Herd Health Management. Asian Longhorn Tick and Theileria: Dr. Risa Pesepane, OSU Vet Preventative Medicine and Managing Disease in 2023: Dr. Justin Kieffer, OSU Animal Sciences.

April 12 – Beef Team Round Table – Ask Questions and Discuss Answers with OSU Extension Beef Team Members

Small Farm Ruminant Production Field Day

Have a small herd of beef cattle, goats, or a flock of sheep? Are you a new or beginning ruminant livestock producer? If yes to either of these questions, this program is for you!

Join OSU Extension educators and state specialists for an all-day workshop covering topics every ruminant livestock producer needs to know from grazing and nutrition, livestock marketing, facilities and housing. This event is slated to be held on Saturday, October 8th from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm at the OSU ATI Beef Center located at 2736 S. Apple Creek Road, Apple Creek, Ohio 44606. After lunch, those who have an interest in sheep or goats will depart to the Small Ruminant Research Unit located on Fredericksburg Road (5651 Fredericksburg Road, Wooster, Ohio 44691), while those focused on beef cattle will remain at the ATI Beef Center.

Afternoon training sessions will be species-specific that include hands-on training in animal care and handling, basic animal health, livestock evaluation, and much more.
