Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. G.O.A.L.S.

I share the philosophy that each person’s differences and unique experiences make communities stronger, and I try to hear, see, and experience different perspectives whenever I can. I appreciate and intend on exploring the fact that Ohio State is a large and diverse community of people that presents many opportunities to learn about others and the viewpoints they share. I have enjoyed learning about different cultural groups throughout history in my English and Dance in Pop Culture classes, and plan to take more courses in the future that examine different social and cultural groups.

In the past I have collaborated with the Sports Biomechanics Lab for a Biomedical Research Academy research project, which I found very intriguing and informative. I would love to pursue a similar opportunity if possible to gain lab experience in the fields of biology or medicine to supplement the courses I’m taking. With plans of medical school in the future, I think these opportunities would not only help implement the material I learn, but prepare me with hands on experiences and skills that will benefit me in whatever career I end up pursuing. Additionally, with my minor in dance, I am excited to participate in or create projects that allow me to express myself artistically, whether that be film projects or performances.

I am currently taking and intend to continue taking classes that both challenge me as well as prepare me with the knowledge and skills I will need in the future. By pushing myself with a rigorous curriculum, I can further expand my learning and incorporate a variety of new experiences and perspectives that will help me grow as a student and as a person. In addition to the general education requirements, I look forward to taking upper division courses in subjects I find fascinating, such as the applications of biology and psychology to different facets of society. I also intend to challenge myself artistically with extra curricular activities such as Dance Connection, which provides me with many varieties of styles of dance and allows me to create choreography of my own.

Expanding on my role in Dance Connection, as a member I am presented with the opportunity to choreograph and perform pieces. That opportunity is inherently leadership building as it helps develop skills in organizing, communicating effectively, working as a group, and creating solutions. These are skills that will directly apply to and benefit me in any future career. Additionally, I plan to apply for a chair position within Dance Connection in later semesters that will further expand my skills in coordinating events, accountability, and communication. Furthermore, I plan on finding other student organizations that will similarly help develop my skills as a leader.

Service is something I’m excited to participate in at Ohio State. Through Dance Connection, there are several outreach programs I will get to participate in throughout Columbus as well as at Buckeyethon. I plan on finding more service opportunities such as these, and additional service organizations that will allow me to give back to the community.

About Me

I’m Grant, and I plan on majoring in biology with a pre-med track in mind, additionally minoring in dance. I love science and learning about how things work, and would love to pair this with the ability to help others in the future! I have danced for eleven years, and was a member of my high schools marching band and color guard, and I’d like to continue to pursue these in some capacity as well.
